Many students already know more than they think—they just need someone to guide them patiently and help them believe in their abilities. A tutor should create a supportive environment where students feel safe to ask questions and learn from…

Being a student myself, i consider a person a good tutor if he/she is capable of establishing a good relation with the students so that the students do not feel intimidated to ask for advices and guidance. But at the same time a tutor should not be iver friendly. Therefore, a balance of positive relationship should be maintained with the students.…

It is a tutor's goal to help their students effectively understand the topic and ensuring that these students know how to apply their knowledge in answering different questions. I personally prefer and encourage others to do the same that while teaching the student, try to also teach them the way to find the solution of the problem, so next time, not only can they do it on their own, but help others as well. First, I try to reach the bottom of the problem, I try to thoroughly understand the situation of the student I am…

A tutor must not only teach children the subject, but also must prepare them to handle real world situations when it comes to applying what they have learnt in class. We as tutors must give them some practice of those types of situations. I am very friendly with kids, and I want them to be open and always let me know if they understand or not, and…

We all learn differently, in different ways, and at different times. A student may be a visual, auditory or movement learner. Some are a combination of all three types of learning styles. It is my job as an educator to determine how each of my students learn best, and to teach them strategies that they can use to help them achieve their full…

A good tutor should be able to motivate the student and kindle the interest in the subject. Once the child starts liking the subject, grades, results etc become the norm and the student will be able to learn effortlessly. I have produced excellent results at GCE and IGCSE examinations. I believe, as a tutor it is our duty to support the students and encourage them through their learning journey. Complimenting a work well done and correcting the mistakes are such examples. Although it may not seem significant it is quite the opposite as it builds the self esteem of a student and gives them confidence to learn the subject. A tutor…

The most important thing is to not only be educational support for the student but also moral support as they may have stress from their parents to do well in school or not get the praise they deserve, which they can get through tutoring. I also believe a good tutor knows in depth what they teach, meaning I can convey my experience and knowledge…

Josh has got off to a good start with Owen. He is always much happier once he has had an hour with Owen going through his Math. We see it is helping Josh with his confidence. At this point, thumbs up and wish we had done this a year ago...hindsight is a gift.

Inside Manor LakesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Aiden focused on mastering the chain rule for differentiation and tackled VCAA Exam 1 (2020) questions, with extra attention to finding equations of cubic functions and using the CAS calculator for graphing.

Year 10 Lachlan worked through advanced trigonometric concepts, including right-angled triangle ratios (sin, cos, tan), exploring the unit circle, and an introduction to solving sine and cosine equations with practice test questions.

For Year 8 Xavier, sessions targeted algebraic problem-solving—solving linear equations by substitution and elimination—and also reinforced geometry skills such as calculating surface area and perimeter through step-by-step examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student in advanced maths left multiple questions incomplete on graph transformations, often avoiding written working. As one tutor noted, "he relied heavily on his CAS calculator for basic sketches," which made it harder to spot misunderstandings about graph shapes and turning points.

In a Year 11 calculus session, notes were missing dates and lacked key steps from class discussion—meaning revision was less effective later.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student's inconsistent handwriting and skipped spelling corrections meant her ideas were clear when spoken but lost detail in writing, leading to confusion during independent tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Manor Lakes noticed that one Year 10 student, who previously hesitated to ask for help, now speaks up whenever unsure about algebraic equations—this shift has made it much easier to address his gaps right away.

In a recent high school session, another student who'd struggled with integrating quotes into essays managed to apply this skill independently while drafting a persuasive response.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner who was reluctant to read aloud finished the entire next chapter out loud without prompting and even asked questions about tricky words as she went.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Manor Lakes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ngarri Primary School.
