Make them like learning for the sake of learning rather than chase after a mark. We as humans love learning but schools and other institutions often encourage chasing certain metrics rather than curiosity and wonder when it comes to learning a subject I can give constructive feedback on a student based on their performance and I encourage them to…

The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. However, sometimes desperate times happen, and then we must drop the profound thoughts and do what needs…

It's to be able to notice the reasons behind my students' struggle and find out the right method and the right way to help them make adjustments and become better at it. It's clear that I am not sort of an expert in the subjects that my students are struggling with, but I would undoubtedly do my best to get them better, including flexibly doing…

In my opinion, the most important responsibility of a tutor is not to teach specific knowledge or skills but to incite the confidence and curiosity for knowledge in students. Ultimately, a successful tutor is the one who can help students out of their bottlenecks, assists them in studying, and finally equips them with the skills and mindsets for…

I believe the most crucial thing that a tutor can do for their student is to encourage not only their understanding of a subject/topic but also their passion and enthusiasm for it. I believe that allowing a student to flourish in an environment tailored to them allows them to treat their studies less as a chore and more as a passion. This not…

I think a tutor can teach a student how to learn a topic after it is explained by the tutor. Because at the end, it is the student who needs to learn by themselves after something is being taught to them. A tutor should make sure that anyone can learn those topics on their own if they are introduced by the tutor. My first strength as a tutor is my…

A tutor should take their time with a student and make sure the student understands before moving on. I believe the purpose of tutoring should be to provide learning strategies that are specific to the individual in contrast with teaching in a classroom (at the pace of the class). A tutor should provide multiple strategies for learning. For…

Facilitating learning for students and empowering them to overcome their obstacles. A tutor needs to be an activator of knowledge and not a proxy to solve problems. I believe support and encouragement are the most important elements that me as a tutor can help my students. Some students do not like to be pushed, and they need time for themselves as well, so supporting and encouraging them will direct them towards success. Some other students may experience difficulties in study (do not get a good result), so…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, foster independent thinking, and create a safe, supportive space for learning. I believe it is important to understand the student's weaknesses and strengths before starting to teach them. I have come across a common problem with students, which is that they often jump straight into trying to solve a problem without fully understanding the theory/basics first. Hence, I try to first help them understand the basics then go…

A student will need a tutor because he/she couldn't understand what was being taught in class. The best thing for a tutor to do is focus on the parts that the student failed to understand and strengthen their understanding in those areas. Primarily, a tutor needs to be a good listener. Listen the problems of an individual carefully and provide the solution. I believe that it is important for tutors to be passionate about teaching. This way, it is easier for the student to gain interest in the subject, which ultimately leads to better performance from the student as they are more motivated to study and learn. I also think that it is important for tutors to create a comfortable learning environment for…

Inside MardenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Isabel revised fractions and percentages through targeted worksheets and tackled area and perimeter of circles, often working through visual diagrams.

In Year 9, Ana focused on trigonometry—specifically applying the sine and cosine rules to solve problems involving non-right angled triangles—and also practiced advanced algebraic equation solving using real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Em in Year 10 worked on expanding and factorising quadratics (using sum and product methods), as well as revising REDOX chemistry theory ahead of an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often got tangled in their thoughts during algebra and worded problems, leading to confusion about when to add or multiply—one tutor noted, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In Year 10, a student arrived unprepared for test revision after forgetting which units were being assessed; this left her overwhelmed and piecing together topics from online resources instead of focusing on practice.

For a senior folio task, another struggled to convert drafts into a formal document and hesitated to work independently—motivation dropped as deadlines approached, with unfinished homework piling up.

Recent Achievements

One Marden tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's approach: after months of hesitating to ask for help, she arrived with her own list of questions and managed to work through all of them in one session, even deciding on her own to make a revision notes sheet for an upcoming test.

In Year 11, another student who had struggled with algebraic fractions tried out a new three-step study strategy and used it independently—her latest test score jumped to 80%. Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who typically did mental math silently began talking through his problem-solving steps aloud for the first time during their lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Payneham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marden Senior College.
