But the most incredible aspect of tutoring is that it merges education and what is usually called enrichment. A good tutor can combine subjects in…

The important thing that a tutor can give a student is time and attention which he might not get in classroom of students. Make the student feel the subject is not difficult by explaining concepts step wise. The tutor can also build self-confidence and problem-solving skills by making him approach the issue first and then guide the correct…

I consider the tutors passion and enthusiasm towards a subject can have a positive impact on how the student receives the information. When a tutor is enthusiastic on the content they are teaching, this transfers to the student. I am patient and try to break down complex content ideas into manageable ideas. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are understanding them and communicating effectively. A tutor is not just there to deliver content, but also to support and guide the student. This means adapting their teaching style instead of using a fixed approach, so it better suits each student’s needs and helps them learn…

For me, the most important thing is helping students actually enjoy math and feel comfortable with the process of not knowing right away. A lot of math is about sitting with that discomfort, resisting the urge to panic, and trusting that if you think logically, you’ll find a way through—even if it’s not the “textbook†method. I want…

The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. However, sometimes desperate times happen, and then we must drop the profound thoughts and do what needs…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for students is making sure that the student completely understands the concept and does not try to rote learn it. I believe that a tutor is a person who can change the point of view of a student through which they can grasp the concept well and improves their understanding ability. I own…

I strongly believe in the idea behind the saying, teach a person how to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime. My engineering degree has taught me how to break…

As a tutor, I believe it is critical for providing a space for students to not be afraid to be wrong and foster engagement. A tutor must allow students to think for themselves and provide prompts which enable more critical and deeper thinking. Encouraging and patient when explaining concepts to students. Tutors need to provide encouragement as this will build both motivation within the student to do well in a subject, and increase their overall confidence in a difficult topic. I believe setting achievable goals is also an important thing a tutor can do. Patience is also critical, as…

Inside MardenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Isabel revised fractions and percentages through targeted worksheets and tackled area and perimeter of circles, often working through visual diagrams.

In Year 9, Ana focused on trigonometry—specifically applying the sine and cosine rules to solve problems involving non-right angled triangles—and also practiced advanced algebraic equation solving using real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Em in Year 10 worked on expanding and factorising quadratics (using sum and product methods), as well as revising REDOX chemistry theory ahead of an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often got tangled in their thoughts during algebra and worded problems, leading to confusion about when to add or multiply—one tutor noted, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In Year 10, a student arrived unprepared for test revision after forgetting which units were being assessed; this left her overwhelmed and piecing together topics from online resources instead of focusing on practice.

For a senior folio task, another struggled to convert drafts into a formal document and hesitated to work independently—motivation dropped as deadlines approached, with unfinished homework piling up.

Recent Achievements

One Marden tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's approach: after months of hesitating to ask for help, she arrived with her own list of questions and managed to work through all of them in one session, even deciding on her own to make a revision notes sheet for an upcoming test.

In Year 11, another student who had struggled with algebraic fractions tried out a new three-step study strategy and used it independently—her latest test score jumped to 80%. Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who typically did mental math silently began talking through his problem-solving steps aloud for the first time during their lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Payneham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marden Senior College.
