1. Teaching engagingly and interestingly: the student should not feel like it is just another class at school, but provide an opportunity for him/her to engage and deliver content in a manner which piques his/her interest. 2. Providing clear explanations: complex content should be broken down and taught according to the student's knowledge level…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are not only concrete plans and a sufficient level of knowledge, but also empathy to understand what the student needs and their natural ability. A tutor, in my opinion, is not someone who places a high level of math practise in the hands of an art student who dislikes math. A…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is to be able to listen, provide feedback that the student is able to take on hand and to create an efficient learning environment. To listen to a student's goals, what they are having difficulty with and how to improve upon these difficulties - are very crucial in the role…

Having had many tutors at university, I've come to realise that a good tutor doesn't simply regurgitate answers from a list of questions. Rather I believe that a tutor has the responsibility of reinforcing what has been taught in class, summarising content and practising with the students. Some important things a tutor can do in addition is…

I think a tutor should in a sense hold the student accountable. For example a student might pick up a set of practice questions in their spare time and leave it mid way through but if that problem set was assigned by the tutor it gives the student far more reason to see the whole thing through. In this way we can provide (external) motivation to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to let the students enjoy and appreciate the lesson. Only then, they will be able to understand and excel in the subjects. I believe following up with students is the best way to create accountability and instil a routine in them. Also, tutors who put in effort after hours, such as staying back to help or creating personalised tasks to target their weak areas, are critical for students to excel in their studies. As a previously tutored student, I can guarantee that…

I believe a tutor can do for a student is to help them in any possible way. I have worked as a private tutor and I believe that there are a wide range of things a tutor can do for a student. First is to be able to teach well and not be too harsh on the student as it creates discouragement. Being able to communicate and be patient will allow the…

The most important things a tutor can do are:- * Provide enough explanation until the student is able to develop his/her own approach to a question and logically solve it step by step, while understanding the reason behind each step. *A tutor should also be willing to solve any kind of doubt and do that as soon as possible, since dealing…

I believe that it's a tutor's purpose is to push the student at a pace that they're capable of achieving regardless of what that level is. A student can only work to the best of their capacity and achieving this efficiency is the advantaged of personalised education. A tutor can notice the student's strength and nourish it through a structured set of activities that the student can do in class as well as independently. A tutor can also notice the areas of student's weaknesses and supply the student with a learning program that can tackle these weaknesses gradually and methodically. Additionally, a tutor is a…

Inside MaroubraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Claudia focused on division and 3D shapes, connecting these to fractions while completing her Excel homework.

For Year 7 Ava, lessons explored coordinate geometry by graphing with tables of values and investigating transformations of shapes on a number plane.

A Year 8 student worked through the introduction to trigonometry using SOHCAHTOA as well as solving simultaneous equations by substitution and elimination methods.

Recent Challenges

In Year 6, one student often avoided showing working in algebra and fractions, especially when unsure—"she would pause, then erase attempts rather than risk a mistake." This hesitation meant feedback opportunities were missed and progress slowed during lessons.

A Year 10 student tackling trigonometry tended to rely heavily on calculator shortcuts for even basic steps, which led to gaps in understanding key trig definitions.

In Year 8 algebra, another lost focus midway through multi-step problems; as noted, "he'd get distracted and forget earlier steps," leading to repeated errors that undermined his confidence in class.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Maroubra noticed Ava, a Year 7 student, recently started checking her own working for mistakes and now asks for tougher questions when she finishes early—this is a big shift from when she'd quietly move on without double-checking.

In Year 6, Claudia used to hesitate with division by large numbers but can now independently solve problems involving six-digit dividends and confidently explains each step aloud.

Meanwhile, Gia (Year 4) has begun completing her homework before sessions without reminders and last week attempted all the "challenge" questions for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lionel Bowen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Aidan's Catholic Primary School.
