I think the most important thing a tutor can do is support and mentor a student, not just teach the content. That means creating a safe, encouraging space where they feel comfortable asking questions, building their confidence, and being guided. A good tutor also helps students develop better study habits and self-belief, setting them up for…

A tutor is someone that a student can rely on for support. They are pragmatic in finding ways to ensure the student has a positive experience with learning. The student is in control, and the tutor is a guide that assists and also facilitates the student to take safe risks, ask questions and completely engage with their learning in ways suitable…

The most important thing a teacher can do for a student is to inspire confidence and a love for learning. When a teacher believes in their students and helps them recognize their own potential, it transforms how they approach education and challenges. Beyond imparting knowledge, a teacher’s role is to create an environment where students feel…

I think that it is imperative for the tutor to try their hardest to create a passion for the subject in the student, as this will motivate them to try as hard as they can. My passion for maths not only motivated me to study but enabled me to thoroughly enjoy and look forward to every lesson. It is also important that the tutor has an open mindset…

As mentioned above, tutoring gives me more space to understand a student's difficulty. Thus, I believe that a tutor's biggest responsibility is to patiently guide the student through that difficulty, in other words, to unlock their ability to comprehend a lingual matter. Additionally, a tutor's role also encompasses helping the students gain more…

I think the most important things a tutor can do is to build the student's confidence. Sometimes students may feel afraid to make mistakes even though in fact they know more than they think. A tutor should also keep encouraging the students to keep going even when it's tough. I think one of my strengths is being patient. I don't mind explaining…

Be adaptable and change teaching methods based on what the student needs the most, whether that's different exercise styles or explaining a concept in a different way. I believe that knowing how to apply the content is just as important as knowing the content in order to maximise marks. I think a strength of mine is reading questions and quickly…

A tutor can make the student love to learn new things. A tutor can make life easier for a student by showing him/her that acquiring knowledge is very beneficial and important for prospering in life later on. I can explain my ideas in a really easy way. Having empathy, because not all content comes too easy for students as it does for us, obviously. Having patience, because it can be frustrating if a tutor just expects a student to "get it" immediately. Being kind. This seems obvious but you may be surprised the number of teachers I've had and met who are not kind, and they are extremely hard…

I believe a tutor's role goes beyond helping students achieve good grades. It is most important that a tutor doesn't give up on their students. This means not only continuing teaching the student but also means that the tutor should always believe a student can improve with their guidance. In addition, it is essential for a tutor to be able to learn the student's strengths and weaknesses and their way of thinking, so the…

I believe the single most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide patient and constant support for them outside of their classroom, and try to clear all their doubts effectively. A tutor needs to be patient and build a healthy learning curve. One of the most important things for a tutor is to be encouraging and positive. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is aid them in being confident enough to always attempt a problem. A great tutor helps a student to put aside the "oh no, I don't know what to do" thought or feeling and and least try to break the problem into something they do know how to do. My strengths as a tutor come in my genuine passion…

Our girls love the tutor. There confidence in math is stronger
Esther, Marrickville

Inside MarrickvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia worked on multiplying fractions by whole numbers and completed a maths assessment to check understanding across key topics.

In Year 7, James practised index laws and simplifying expressions with like terms, using step-by-step examples for clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Mia focused on calculating area and volume of 3D shapes as well as tackling multi-step worded questions involving both two- and three-dimensional figures.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student tended to rush through multiplication problems, leading to repeated small errors—"he made little mistakes with multiplication while trying to get through the maths work as quickly as possible."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student struggled with times tables and would often guess rather than calculate answers for division or fraction tasks.

In Year 7 English, a reluctance to argue from another perspective meant written responses were shorter and less developed.

During homework in Year 4, spelling activities left a student frustrated and distracted when difficult words slowed progress; unfinished sections remained at lesson's end.

Recent Achievements

A Marrickville tutor recently noticed that Sophie, a high school student, now independently works through mixed word problems in maths tests—last term she needed reminders for every step, but this week she finished 1.5 tests in the time needed for one and went back to check her answers without prompting.

Another win: Olivia, also in high school, has started fixing mistakes in her fraction calculations before writing them down, where previously she'd skip checking altogether.

In Year 4 English, Leon moved from short sentences to adding more detail on his own; last session he wrote four connected sentences with clear arguments about wisdom versus money.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inner West Council Library & History: Marrickville Branch—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Brigid's Catholic Primary School.
