The most important things a tutor can do for a student includes Building a strong connection with their students and guiding them along the way through their educational journey. Providing support for the student when they feel down because of outside events. Simply being available for them is what I consider important for what a tutor can…

-I believe it is a tutor's duty to make sure the student understands the concept thoroughly and precisely as possible,. -A tutor can always jump to the basics of a particular concept if it is not clear for the student. This is mostly not possible in a classroom. -Last but not the least, be a good listener and patient with the students. -Time…

One would be being aware on how different students have different learning abilities and understanding their patterns hence devising suitable study plan for each and everyone of them. Teaching is pretty subjective and could be very useful if the tutor is making smart decisions. I also think creating a safe and warm environment for them to not…

Enable them to quickly understand and solve problems with strong basic knowledge. A tutor can help a student to set high expectations and work towards them, making their stuggle easier. Being committed to the student and their growth should be the most important thing for a tutor. There is nothing more rewarding for a teacher than seeing their student improve under them. Secondly, the tutor should explain the concepts thoroughly, and also structure the lessons in such a way that learning could be made easier. Thirdly, the tutor…

A tutor should be well-prepared in ensuring students completely comprehend subject that is being taught. A tutor should be prepared to answer all sorts of question asked by the students. An excellent tutor should be genuinely interested in the students understanding. He/she should not be afraid to acknowledge anything they do not know. Instead,…

Having had many tutors at university, I've come to realise that a good tutor doesn't simply regurgitate answers from a list of questions. Rather I believe that a tutor has the responsibility of reinforcing what has been taught in class, summarising content and practising with the students. Some important things a tutor can do in addition is…

The most important thing would be to instill interest. To be called a succesfull tutor, one need to instill interest to their students to study during their own time, because we only meet them once or twice a week and most of the time they have to learn by themselves. My strenghs would be my perseverance and open mindedness in teaching. Each…

All the students in a class do not have the same level of understanding, so the teacher needs to be very patient to make sure that all her students are carried along. That no student is made to feel less than others despite his/her performance. A teacher should constantly encourage her student to be better. A teacher should continually liven the…

It is important tutors: - When possible, teach the material in a way that allows students to 'see the forest through the trees' in order for them to more effectively engage in the important details. - Teach in a way that allows for active, intuitive learning, rather than passive rote memorization. - Make students feel like they are part of a…

I believe that a tutor is not merely someone who helps students to better understand certain materials taught at school. A tutor should be a role model both in their character and willingness to learn. A tutor should plant motivation and confidence in their students so that they believe that they can succeed in whatever areas they're lacking at,…

A tutor can help improve a student in academic success. In a classroom setting a teacher has to cover a specific amount of content within a particular time period, some students can pick up the content very easily while others may lag behind on the content. A tutor however solves this issue by understanding the student's strengths and weaknesses…

I strongly believe the student should be interested in the subject. And I think, it is the role of the tutor to create that interest. The tutor's success is similar to that of a doctor. Fantastic tutor, Suraj. Makes maths enjoyable, for my son who Is in year 11. Marks have improved significantly.
Darren Howard, Maroubra

Inside MatravilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Arden worked on fractions and rates, with extra focus on applying these skills to typical exam content.

For Year 10, Zara practised financial mathematics concepts such as calculating interest and applying percentage increases using real-world scenarios.

In Year 11, Jack tackled advanced trigonometric identities and differentiation techniques, reinforcing his understanding through targeted questions drawn from recent past papers.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student hesitated to start extended questions in calculus, often spending extra time recalling formulas rather than confidently applying them—"she took a while to remember the formula."

In a Year 9 lesson, messy working and skipped steps in ratios meant sign errors went unnoticed until final answers were checked.

During Year 7 algebra revision, only familiar problems were attempted, leaving strategy-based challenges untouched.

For one senior student, over-reliance on practice with easy content left gaps when faced with exam-level bearing or integration tasks.

Under pressure, small mistakes snowballed into lost marks and growing uncertainty.

Recent Achievements

A Matraville tutor recently saw a Year 12 student, Lucy, who had previously hesitated with complex calculus problems now tackling differentiation and optimisation questions without waiting for hints—she's starting to place formulas independently where she once needed step-by-step guidance.

In Year 10, Ruby used to skip tricky probability tasks but is now drawing Venn diagrams herself to solve multi-part probability questions.

Meanwhile, Selena in Year 4 made a leap by identifying complicated patterns in number sequences after initially struggling to spot any regularity, then explained her thinking aloud as she solved a new time zone question on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Malabar Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School Matraville.
