I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to foster confidence in their students to independently learn and build confidence in their skills. A tutor should also be able to inspire curiosity so that students become better learners in their field and ask questions. Lastly, the tutor should be flexible to personalise the…

Without understanding the student you can explain him an entire Library and the student will still be an illiterate or at worse develop fear or disinterest in learning. The tutor needs to care about the student's learning. They need to understand the way each student learns best and mould their pedagogy to fit the student. The tutor needs to be able to recognise consistency in errors so that they can make the student aware of where they are going wrong and can help fix it. The tutor also needs to be patient and…

Making a student as confident as possible is the upmost important aspect of tutoring in my mind. This is because, no matter how many hours are spent studying, if a student is not confident within themselves, in exam settings they will constantly doubt themselves and make avoidable mistakes. Therefore, building students confidence is the most…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with a supportive and encouraging learning environment. This means taking the time to understand each student's unique needs, learning style, and interests, and tailoring the tutoring approach accordingly. A good tutor should also be patient and compassionate,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand how they learn and ensure the student feels comfortable. By understanding how the student learns both the tutor and the student can make the most of the…

As a tutor, I believe the core priority is to support the student’s learning in the most effective and personalised way possible. Building a student’s confidence is just as important as helping them achieve higher marks, as the two often go hand in hand. Having experienced the benefits of tutoring myself in high school, I understand firsthand…

Be patient with them; if they don’t understand what you are teaching them, find another way to help them reach a better understanding, may need to be creative in your approach. Listen to what they are asking you. Don’t just tell them how to do it, help them understand why and how it should be done. As a recent high school graduate and current…

A tutor can help create a safe environment for a child to voice their concerns with learning which they may feel unable to do in a class setting. Having one-on-one tutor sessions can also help a child to target exactly what they are struggling with. A tutor also has more time with that student to assess what they are good at in order to keep…

I believe an important component of tutoring is patience, ensuring that the student completely understands the topic before moving on. This leads into following up. Following up the previous session for a couple of minutes in the next lesson is highly beneficial as the student can show their understanding of the topic, allowing the opportunity to…

Inside Mayfield EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Tyler focused on adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals, as well as working through fraction operations and rounding numbers in preparation for his maths grading exam.

In Year 11, Erika tackled dividend yield calculations and revisited shares and dividends before switching to biology topics like autosomal and sex-linked inheritance using Punnett squares and pedigrees.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Jackson worked through financial mathematics concepts including compound interest, depreciation of assets, credit card use, and normal distribution applications with practical problem sets.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 Maths, one student's workbook "could be a little more organised and tidy"—messy working sometimes made errors harder to spot in decimal multiplication and long division.

In Year 11, another student often left homework incomplete and struggled to keep up with revision outside lessons; notes were "not dated," which made tracking progress on financial maths and bivariate data difficult.

For HSC-level Maths, as one tutor noted, "he took 40mins on the multiple choice which decreased his time on the other sections," showing that time management during tests remains an obstacle, especially when unfamiliar topics arise.

Recent Achievements

One Mayfield East tutoring session saw Jackson, a Year 12 student, move from missing key parts of exam questions to independently underlining data and circling action words—he now completes most network problems without needing prompts.

Chloe in Year 8, who used to rely heavily on help for ratio questions, recently solved real-life ratio scenarios on her own after asking clarifying questions.

Meanwhile, Erika in Year 11 has begun pointing out her tutor's errors during maths review—something she was once hesitant to do—which shows she's not only grasping the content but is also willing to speak up when something doesn't add up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mayfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mayfield East Public School.
