Most important thing would be to provide ample support for self study including guides and worksheets. Another thing would be to set clear small weekly goals to remind students of their progress and allow them to reflect and get motivated to stay on path I think I am someone who recognises when there is a lack of foundation in a concept and I am…

I think the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach him different things while motivating the student and making sure he/she/they understand the essence of the teaching so that they can apply it in daily life rather than asking them to memorize different things. This way the students not only get good grades but also store whatever…

I think the most important things a tutor should do for a student is to encourage the student to do better rather than to aim for perfect grades. Every improvement, regardless of the extent, is an improvement and it should be appreciated. A tutor should also prepare for the lessons before hand and have a lesson goal/outline to keep on track. A…

I understand that not every child has the same potential. As a tutor, I am obligated to understand the struggles and pace of each student to achieve team success. The most important thing a tutor can do for the students is to celebrate their successes, no matter how small, and encourage them to persevere through challenges with a positive…

Creating a wanting to learn. No child will improve grades if they do not want to learn and that comes from my own personal experience. Therefore the most important thing for me is that I can help a student enjoy learning and then through that passion myself and the student can enjoy seeing improvements in their learning and grades. It’s also…

The best thing a tutor can provide their student is to give them the guidance and inspiration so as to spark a curiosity to want to learn more about the subject without any external guidance. A tutor should be able to build confidence for a student in a subject that is not their strongest. By building this confidence, students can go into exams with a clear understanding of the subject. For the student’s future, the confidence from succeeding in a subject can flow into other aspects of their lives, allowing them to help others. I am…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence and develop their independent study skills. This involves creating a supportive learning environment, providing personalised learning materials, and encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Lastly, also be able to empathise with the student, to…

Amidst the competitive pressure of institutions on this generation's children, one of the vital things a tutor can do for a fellow student is to provide a safe space for them to be able to express themselves, i.e allowing them to ask questions and understand the weaknesses of their students. That way they will be enthusiastic to learn from their…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand them. Being a student myself, I know the importance of needing to know even the smallest details but also finding it…

I believe the best thing I can teach a student is the ability to think critically and for themselves. Rather than giving them the answer, I would show them how to get to an answer so they become independent and self-sufficient over time. Patience and empathy. A tutor needs to be reminded that it's their student they have to make better, not themselves, hence most of the time we should end up giving tasks to students and let them solve them themselves. Only to interrupt them when they are stuck or can't get over a problem, we should remember that we are more of assistants rather than problem solvers…

In my point of view, the most important part of tutoring is to simplify topics and make them easy for students to understand. I always try to match my teaching style to each student’s way of learning. I use clear speech and body language to make sure they stay interested. Even if the topic is hard or boring at first, I break it down into small,…

Inside MaylandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sarah worked on simplifying algebraic expressions and solving equations for unknowns, using practice problems to strengthen confidence.

In Year 9, Daniel focused on converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages as well as finding the area of composite shapes by breaking them into parts.

For Year 10, Lily reviewed calculations involving box and whisker plots alongside key probability concepts, applying these skills to real data scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4 mathematics, one student became distracted during multi-step calculation tasks—by the final questions, focus drifted and errors increased, especially with addition and subtraction over ten.

"He skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors," a tutor noted for a Year 8 lesson: incomplete working meant mistakes went unnoticed until review.

In senior years (Year 10), homework was sometimes left unfinished when confusion arose; these unattempted problems limited exposure to essential problem-solving strategies.

Handwriting issues also emerged—misreading their own workings caused setbacks during geometry revision, leading to unnecessary frustration and wasted time searching for lost logic mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A Maylands tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to avoid checking his answers now takes time to double-check clues and fix mistakes independently, showing real initiative during problem-solving.

In a recent high school session, another student who previously hesitated with algebraic equations made a breakthrough—speaking aloud their reasoning and picking up factorising much more quickly than before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who often lost focus was able to study for twenty minutes without complaint and converted tricky fractions accurately, finally finishing all assigned problems in one sitting for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Maylands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bold Park Community School - Maylands.
