Be accommodating and accepting of the fact that all students are not the same. Tutors need to equip themselves with multiple strategies, examples and methods to explain to all different kinds of students. I am very patient and resilient in everything I do, including teaching. I have taught students who are child like in their 8th grade up to…

I believe the most important part of being tutor is building confidence in students. Anyone can learn and master anything, it's all about how you approach and the mindset you have while learning. I also think helping students develop good study habits and providing encouragement is really important too. I'm someone that takes time to understand…

My goal is to help students enjoy math as much as possible. From my own experience, viewing math problems as puzzles has been incredibly beneficial. While most people prioritize gaining a better understanding of the subject, I believe that if students can find joy in math, a deeper understanding will naturally follow. I have extensive experience…

Build their confidence! A lot of the struggles come from the fact that students are not meeting "expectations" but do not know what 'they do not know' and that makes it difficult for them to improve. This sets off a nasty downward spiral where they feel they are not good enough and lose confidence in themselves, which naturally leads to less…

Listening, the feeling of being heard is so important in a child’s development. Asking questions, how will we know if we are really helping the students if we don’t ask? Kindness, I wouldn’t want to become a child’s worst enemy and make them dread coming to tutoring sessions. I’m patient and perseverant, I can sit with students until…

When I was in grade two, I encountered Königsberg bridge problem and I found that mathematics is not just about formula and calculation (despite now I know that this problem belongs to topology). Therefore, in my opinion, being a tutor is not just about improving students' grade, but also to foster their passion and curiosity toward the subject.…

A tutor should be able to listen just as well as a student is expected to, yet also be able to pay close attention to their own students - this is beneficial in finding out when students might be struggling so that extra time can be allocated to certain areas. I also think a critical thing for tutors to do is to reflect on student's performance in…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide a solid foundation of techniques to allow children to be independent learners. A tutor should act as both a role model and a mentor. The main goal should be to teach them subject content, but their role should not be limited to this. A tutor can also be viewed as a role model and someone to look up to. They can act as a friend and mentor, and help guide students on the right path. This means also giving advice outside of the…

To be able to encourage a student to strive for higher results and greater understanding. Inside MelbourneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Jason reviewed key concepts in Trigonometry, including complementary angles, and practiced differentiation using first principles to prepare for a Math Methods test.

Year 12 student worked through complex numbers in polar form (cis(theta)) and tackled textbook exercises, also revising inverse trigonometric functions ahead of an upcoming Specialist Mathematics assessment.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student covered the basics of linear equations—solving for one variable and graphing lines—and explored atomic structure in Chemistry, focusing on subatomic particles and electron shells.

Recent Challenges

Homework was not completed in a recent Year 11 session, which left gaps in understanding and slowed progress with new calculus problems—"please do the HW:), as it'll really strengthen your understanding," noted the tutor.

In another Year 12 lesson, revision focused mainly on familiar question types; less time was spent on more challenging trigonometric proofs and complex numbers, limiting exposure to higher-level exam material.

For a Year 4 student tackling long division, feeling stressed when unable to solve problems instantly led to hesitation in practice. In these moments, avoidance or incomplete work delayed deeper confidence and fluency.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Melbourne recently noticed Jason, a Year 11 student, moving from hesitancy to actively asking thoughtful questions while tackling challenging Trigonometry problems—a big step up from his earlier quietness.

In another high school session, Thomas started out unsure with negative numbers but now solves linear equations more confidently after connecting operations across Math and Chemistry.

Meanwhile, a younger student, Charlie, who used to get stuck on addition and subtraction, can now work through most sums without help.

Last week, Jonas—previously distracted—chose mental maths strategies himself and completed all division tasks unaided.
