Student success is a teacher's number one priority. For some students, success will be getting a good grade. For others, it might mean increased involvement in class. I can help students attain their full potential, regardless of the way they measure success. I know my students and am able to teach to their needs. I am able to modify lesson…

Apart from supporting students’ academic performance, I think a tutor can be a constant presence in a child’s or youth’s life and thus, it is equally important that a tutor can support their students emotionally and mentally. I am compassionate and patient with children - these are the traits that I have built up firmly over time and past…

To impart knowledge as well as learning techniques that can be useful not only for the subject at hand, but also for all other subjects the student will have to study in the future. I do my best to build and cultivate a relationship with my students. I believe this is important for me to know what motivates them, and from there I can devise the…

The most important thing for a tutor is being able to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the student. This will allow for the most efficient use of time and it will be the most beneficial to the student as the tutor can focus on addressing the weaknesses of the student. Furthermore it is essential that the tutor can interact with the…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is to support the student providing them confidence to tackle the task in front of them. Second to this I think is to provide them a roadmap of how to deal with a situation where they don't know the answer or the approach to the question. Teaching that not knowing the answer to the question is ok and…

The benefit that distinguishes a tutor from a classroom teacher is how a tutor is able to tailor the learning experience such that each student is best fitted according to how they learn. This means the tutor adjusts to the student's pace, learning style, and knowledge gaps. Thus the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to properly…

The most important aspect of tutoring, besides providing students with better grades, is allowing them to feel comfortable when I am tutoring them. Tutor's is not about teaching students the correct answer for a particular question. But more importantly, is to understand the weakness of the student and help them to avoid the barrel effect and hence the overall performance of the student is good. This is where tutor could add value. I am patient and I am good at using analogy. I am also good…

When I tutor students, I tend not to follow the same pattern or process of learning for every kid. I believe tutor can play huge role in a student’s life when it comes to teaching them how to fish rather than serving the fish. empower them for their life goal, and know why study is important. Students have to be proactive, tutor will not be always with you in your life, at some point of life, you need to be your own tutor. Initially, he/she must understand the background (educational / intellectual) of the student(s). Moreover, need to understand on where the student is struggling and what he/she wants to achieve. It will give a tutor a great perspective on when and how to start. Then, develop a lesson plan accordingly. Be the guide but not a helper of a student. It…

Great question — and honestly, what matters most depends a bit on the student’s needs, but here are some core things that I think every great tutor should do: 1. Create a Safe, Supportive Space A tutor should make students feel comfortable asking any question without fear of judgment. Learning only happens when students feel safe to say,…

Inside MenaiTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia focused on solving simultaneous equations using graphical, elimination, and substitution methods, and also practiced probability questions.

In Year 10, Jack worked through chemical and periodic trends—like atomic radii, electronegativity, and ionisation energy—and tackled mole calculations with real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Mia explored equilibrium constants in chemistry and began tackling early concepts from the Year 11 Chemistry curriculum to build confidence for next term.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student struggled to sustain ideas in short answer English responses; "she missed valuable information by reading too quickly," which left key points underdeveloped and reduced marks.

In Year 11 Chemistry, confusion between moles and molecules persisted because written working was incomplete—leaving calculation errors hidden until review.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student tended to do algebra steps mentally rather than on paper, leading to frequent sign mistakes ("he tends to make some silly mistakes doing working out in his head").

After disappointing test results, one Year 9 learner lost focus and avoided reviewing feedback, stalling progress that week.

Recent Achievements

A Menai tutoring session saw Lily, a Year 11 chemistry student, actively organising her notes and making a real effort to adapt complex ideas into formats she could work through independently—previously she hesitated to tackle these tasks alone.

Meanwhile, Sam in Year 10 maths shifted from needing frequent guidance on compound interest questions to completing them confidently with little assistance.

For one of our younger students, Issac in Year 4, he initially struggled with area but persisted through the challenge and was able to complete his assignment with minimal changes needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Menai Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Menai Public School.
