I think patience is the most important skill a tutor can have. Some students don't understand a concept right away, I had to have a concept explained to me multiple times before and if the tutor was patient I was not scared to ask. I think as I have been tutored before I knew what worked for me and what didn't so I could apply those ideas. This…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them understand the course content- so they can pass assessment- and also to help them understand other aspects of the subject they need or want to understand, either for the sake of curiosity or because they have some use for it. It is best if this understanding is of a deep…

I believe that a tutor should be extremely cautious in what they say; can everything be supported with a logical statement? Because the steps the tutors take to construct the answer are how the students learn from them, a tutor must prepare well and be confident and knowledgeable of what they are giving to the students. It's not about providing…

Tutors can provide a one-on-one situation where they're able to realise the students weaknesses and target those areas. With my previous experience both as being a tutor and being tutored by someone else, I believe a tutor should pay a fundamental role in empowering students to take ownership of their learning. Inside MenaiTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia focused on solving simultaneous equations using graphical, elimination, and substitution methods, and also practiced probability questions.

In Year 10, Jack worked through chemical and periodic trends—like atomic radii, electronegativity, and ionisation energy—and tackled mole calculations with real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Mia explored equilibrium constants in chemistry and began tackling early concepts from the Year 11 Chemistry curriculum to build confidence for next term.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student struggled to sustain ideas in short answer English responses; "she missed valuable information by reading too quickly," which left key points underdeveloped and reduced marks.

In Year 11 Chemistry, confusion between moles and molecules persisted because written working was incomplete—leaving calculation errors hidden until review.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student tended to do algebra steps mentally rather than on paper, leading to frequent sign mistakes ("he tends to make some silly mistakes doing working out in his head").

After disappointing test results, one Year 9 learner lost focus and avoided reviewing feedback, stalling progress that week.

Recent Achievements

A Menai tutoring session saw Lily, a Year 11 chemistry student, actively organising her notes and making a real effort to adapt complex ideas into formats she could work through independently—previously she hesitated to tackle these tasks alone.

Meanwhile, Sam in Year 10 maths shifted from needing frequent guidance on compound interest questions to completing them confidently with little assistance.

For one of our younger students, Issac in Year 4, he initially struggled with area but persisted through the challenge and was able to complete his assignment with minimal changes needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Menai Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Menai Public School.
