Keeping them interested in the subject, making them believe that it's not just about marks, but understanding. Making them to fall in love with the subject. Doing that subject should make them feel happy, not anxious. I focus more on logic and intuition, rather than memorizing. Being someone who used to fail regularly before becoming one of the…

Amidst the competitive pressure of institutions on this generation's children, one of the vital things a tutor can do for a fellow student is to provide a safe space for them to be able to express themselves, i.e allowing them to ask questions and understand the weaknesses of their students. That way they will be enthusiastic to learn from their…

A tutor should not just provide answers, but guide students through the process so they can develop independent problem-solving skills. Encouraging questions and making…

The best thing a tutor can provide their student is to give them the guidance and inspiration so as to spark a curiosity to want to learn more about the subject without any external guidance. I think a good tutor is beyond just a subject matter expert and can be conducive to the development of the student as a whole. I feel the concept of tutoring is very personal and that a tutor should make a student feel comfortable enough to encourage him/her to view the tutor as a confidante. Furthermore, there's the added advantage of being able…

I think the most important things a tutor should do for a student is to encourage the student to do better rather than to aim for perfect grades. Every improvement, regardless of the extent, is an improvement and it should be appreciated. A tutor should also prepare for the lessons before hand and have a lesson goal/outline to keep on track. 1. Be patient to students. Sometimes tutor need to explain a concept or questions multiple times to students until they understand it. So patience is very important. 2. Even though I have no experience in the field as of yet I think themost important thing a tutor can do for their students is give them time and space to openly ask their questions and clarify any doubts. So being open for questions and allocating time for his/her students is a key aspect of teaching in any level. Understanding the mindset of…

I feel sometimes the whole syllabus or some questions might look overwhelming at first for a student so often they need guidance to get started. Breaking down the syllabus or even a problem in smaller parts has often helped them. I think preparing them on how to face a question is one of the most important things a tutor should do for a student.…

I think it is very important for a tutor to be friendly and encouraging, to establish a good rapport with the student. It is important for a tutor to explain things in a way that the student is able to understand at their level, and to help the student to actually understand what is going on, rather than merely memorising formulas to pass a test.…

Inside MenoraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Annie focused on converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions, then practiced addition and subtraction with mixed numbers.

In Year 9, Liam worked through graphing quadratic polynomials in f(x) form and was introduced to exponential graphs by sketching several types for practice.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Emily revised bivariate data analysis and measurement skills, including calculating the perimeter of different shapes and reviewing indices and surds.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 maths, hesitation to trust initial answers led to over-erasing and second-guessing; "Stop erasing working!" was a tutor's note after a polynomial exercise. This perfectionism slowed progress and hid the reasoning behind mostly correct solutions.

In Year 8 algebra, not reading each question carefully resulted in solving for area when perimeter was required—losing marks despite knowing the process.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's recount writing often lacked sentence breaks and clear formatting, making ideas hard to follow for both writer and reader. Misplaced confidence or messy structure meant extra time spent clarifying rather than advancing.

Recent Achievements

One Menora tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with indices and surds is now asking questions on her own and isn't getting tripped up by tricky conversions between shapes or units.

In a recent high school session, another student who'd struggled with quadratic equations was able to work through several problems independently, only checking in for occasional guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner—previously unsure about reading time—now confidently converts between am/pm and 24-hour clock formats without help, even explaining the process aloud as she works.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inglewood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Coolbinia Primary School.
