I think the most important thing for a tutor to do is to continue to provide ongoing support for its student. The tutor needs to help the student through their educational journey by providing extensive resources for their students in order for them to grow to become successful students. I am quite flexible with my time which allows me to help my…

Motivate them to study. A lot of the times the students are more than capable to achieve good grades but they just struggle with motivation to study, hence the first thing i do is motivate them to study. Being able to explain almost everything in the simplest of steps so that anyone can understand complex topics easily. Also giving my students…

- being empathetic and not sympathetic. - Maths should be taught in a way that it's no longer scary, and history in a way it's not boring . - homeworks and assignments should be for improvement and not merely a task - be a friend they can confide in , there are 2 types of fuels self sustaining energy once harnessed (like uranium) and the ones…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

I consider empathising with the student the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. I think the most important thing is not to dump all my knowledge onto a student, but to have them have their own lightbulb moment, and figure out ways and strategies that work for best them. I am able to go at a pace that they are able to adapt to, implement different strategies easily, and I get along with a wide range of people, creating a safe…

Provide a safe space for the student to make mistakes without judgement. They don’t always have this at school with their peers looking on. Provide high level materials that don’t just duplicate those from school or in generic books. I really think about the resources we use to make sure they are the right level, challenging and have stretch…

Inside Middle CoveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Izzy focused on fraction operations and percentages, using revision sheets to pinpoint strengths and gaps.

Year 9 student Ella worked through linear relationships and algebraic equations in preparation for an upcoming topic test.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sophie revised coordinate geometry concepts, specifically the distance formula and Pythagoras' method for finding interval lengths, applying these to practice problems with diagrams where helpful.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student working on percentages showed good understanding but could increase speed with more targeted practice—slower pacing meant less time for new concepts.

In a senior maths session, a tutor observed "past papers revision must be done," as the student had focused mostly on familiar problems and avoided tackling harder, unfamiliar exam questions.

Another high school student over-complicated ratio tasks, which made timed exam practice stressful and led to unfinished sections.

Meanwhile, in English, one secondary student struggled to develop richer dialogue in creative writing, resulting in flat characters and limited narrative tension.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Middle Cove recently noticed a big shift with Izzy, who used to hesitate before answering but now attempts maths questions independently and is less afraid to share her reasoning out loud.

In Year 12 Physics, Kristina initially felt overwhelmed by Advanced Mechanics, so she worked with the tutor to revisit Trigonometry first—now she's actively identifying concepts that need extra attention each session.

Another high school student, Cael, has moved from sticking to simple story ideas to experimenting with dialogue and character profiles for writing tasks. Last session, he developed a full story outline without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Castlecrag Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School.
