I think the most important thing a tutor can do is give students the right direction and support so they can build confidence and excel on their own. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor is that I’m always willing to learn. If there’s something I’m not fully confident about, I make time to understand it properly—because I believe I can…

The things I consider most important for tutors are clarity, confidence, and independence. Clear explanations can turn topics that a student might shy away from into smaller ideas that they can relate to and therefore understand. Confidence grows when you celebrate small wins and frame mistakes as part of the learning process. Afterwards,…

I think maintaining an open mind, patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude are among the most important things a tutor can do. Acknowledging and adapting to each student's learning pace is vital, as it varies individually. My patience and engaging behaviour with students. I understand the amount of effort and time needed for this role, but…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to assist them in developing the relevant skills that they need to be successful and proficient in a subject, to the point in which they have enough confidence within their own abilities to approach the curriculum without feeling that they require extra assistance. The role of…

To answer any queries first - then go ahead with the class concepts. It is so important that the student learns the foundations of their chosen subject and that these foundation principles are practiced and solid. Without these foundation, students will struggle to understand further and more complex problems, so it's up to the tutor to make sure…

To help encourage them to try there best. Everyone wants 100% but they may not necessarily get it. A tutor has to help a student reach their own version of 100%, to put in all their effort, enjoy their work, and be proud. A tutor can enable students to fully grasp and comprehend the depth of what they learn and this is the most important thing, as it opens up the door for understanding any problem and applying knowledge. The primary reason why a student may hire a tutor is to give them the in-depth understanding of "Why" the concept is the way it hence. Hence, explaining them the core concept, which enables them to solve the problems during their exams and assignments without having any second doubts. Build their confidence. Every student is different. One cannot treat them on the same plain. Some are aware of their shortcomings and are just confused. Some are hardworking while others can be smart-workers or differently remarked. A tutor must recognise that talent in them and help them use it in growing. Explaining instances metaphorically…

Being an inspirational character. A tutor has to encourage his/her students always. During a semester/course, there will be certain times when students will lose interests for a poor mark (may be), or a personal problem. A tutor can't force a student to complete a session because it has to! A friendly approach can be helpful sometimes as well.…

Inside Mill ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jasmine worked on multiplying and dividing fractions, including using variable symbols to form general formulas.

In Year 10, Chloe focused on solving linear equations and graphing them using the y = mx + c format, as well as deriving equations from graphs.

For VCE Chemistry, Naomi was introduced to stoichiometric problems and discussed how to apply mole ratios in basic chemical calculations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Science, Courtney relied heavily on school-provided notes and rarely created her own, making it difficult to recall concepts in assessments. As a tutor noted, "the teacher-provided notes are not as helpful in solving problems," especially when she couldn't find the right formula in physics or chemistry.

In Year 7 Maths, Peyton struggled with keeping track of variables and often left working unshown—"she skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

Meanwhile, a senior student entered exams with scattered revision materials; missing consolidated notes meant critical formulas were forgotten under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Mill Park tutor recently noticed that a Year 11 student, Courtney, now actively double-checks her calculations and pinpoints mistakes herself—last term she hesitated to backtrack or question her own working.

In another session, a high schooler who used to wait for prompts began independently seeking clarification whenever something felt unclear, marking a real shift towards self-advocacy.

Meanwhile, in primary years, Angeline showed new initiative by researching attributes of polygons for homework without being asked and then presented her findings with confidence during the next lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mill Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Francis of Assisi School.
