A tutor, in my opinion, helps the student build on what they have already covered in their schools. Sometimes, it's all about helping them further their understanding and establishing strong connections between the concepts taught in class and the activities in their everyday life and tailor the content according to their level of understanding…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to empathise. It’s essential to understand how a student feels—whether it’s about the content itself or the teaching style being used. A tutor who can step into a student’s shoes is better able to identify their struggles, adapt their approach, and create a supportive learning…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make sure the student is engaged, without the full attention of the student even the simplest topics are impossible to teach. After personally attending multiple tutoring services, I've realised engagement is more important than the ease of understanding sometimes, I will strive to provide…

Being supportive, encouraging and validating for sure. Providing constructive feedback all the time which enables a deeper and further understanding of the subject. Rewarding their achievements, which overall encourages them to do and achieve more. I think also being patient is crucial, this knowledge and subjects can be super hard sometimes, so…

From my personal experience, I believe helping students build good habits is key to a student's success. This can include underlining key terms and information, looking out for certain question types, or to show working out. I can break down complicated concepts to a level that matches the understanding of the person I'm helping. This makes it…

I believe that a tutor should be able to help the student both grow as a person and mentally with their learning. In a hindsight, a tutor is someone they can trust and rely on with regards to getting help for homework, learning new concepts, and getting advice regarding exam and assessment task preparations. So as such, if the tutor can enable a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient, understading and to listen. This allows for the student to be comfortable and be in a space where they can learn at an optimal rate and feel comfortable to ask any questions related to the work. I am understanding and have the ability to empathise with the student, allowing me…

I believe in these times students lack the confidence and motivation that studying requires. They are continuously forced to learn new concepts rapidly. I am an attentive individual who specializes in perfecting a steady and solid base before moving to complex information. in this way, the student is confident to create steady incremental progress…

- be understanding - patience - being able to adapt to different students learning capability and capacity - having faith in the student I am very good at coming up with analogies which as a math tutor, is a key skill as it reshapes a math concept into real life applications. Many students struggle not because they lack ability, but because they doubt themselves. I prioritise showing them they’re capable, celebrate their progress, and reinforce that mistakes are part of learning. Beyond just teaching content, help them develop strong study habits, problem-solving skills, and a growth mindset. This gives them tools to…

A tutor should build the students understanding, confidence, and independence in their own unique learning style. To do this I need to most importantly explain concepts clearly, identify gaps, and create a supportive environment where the student feels comfortable asking questions. A tutor is an important role and a mentor. Students select tutors because they have the enthusiasm to learn and perhaps do not have the resources needed which a tutor can fill in. Recognize the needs of my student and help them improve their study skills, help them when they ask for it, and develop their confidence. Also, let them know that it's okay to make mistakes. I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to understand their lifestyle and work according to that so that there is minimal pressure and more learning for them. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is show that the student can be independent in their thinking and be capable of approaching a question from different angles. Inside MintoTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student John practised calculating perimeters of various shapes and worked on estimating and converting measurements between units like metres and centimetres.

In Year 8, Lachlan tackled improper and proper fractions as well as addition and subtraction problems, using visual models where helpful.

For Year 11, Leon focused on financial mathematics by working through textbook questions involving simple and compound interest calculations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student repeatedly skipped writing out working in algebra and graphing tasks, which caused the same sign errors to pop up each time—especially when solving for x and y.

In Year 11 trigonometry, a rushed approach led to missing important details, so homework was set to reinforce systematic question breakdown.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student's handwriting made it difficult for her to review mistakes or show her reasoning clearly in spelling and maths tests.

One younger learner avoided written work during reading practice, hesitating to try new words aloud for fear of making errors—a hesitation that lingered even after encouragement.

Recent Achievements

One Minto tutor noticed a big shift with Leon, a high school student who used to hesitate when tackling graphing questions—now he identifies equations and draws accurate graphs on his own, even explaining where functions increase or decrease.

Vasati, also in high school, has started converting tricky word problems into mathematical steps without needing prompts, which had been a stumbling block earlier for her earlier in the term.

Meanwhile, in Year 3 reading sessions, one student who previously guessed at unfamiliar words now sounds them out and tries spelling before asking for help—a change from her old habit of waiting for answers.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greg Percival Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Minto Public School.
