Provide a range of ways of looking at the topic. Encourage them to come up with solutions, guided by the tutors questions or queries. Create a comfortable and respectful environment, where the student can feel both safe and challenged. I am very patient and calm. Specific, targeted focus on the students areas of weakness. Identify exactly where (according to the marking criterion) they are losing out, and establish a focus on the content or skills that will remedy this weakness. In my experience, students are often fully capable of achieving higher grades, they simply don't understand what they're doing…

Understand their individual circumstances. Some students seek tutoring in order to excel, whilst others may need assistance in a subject they are struggling to pass. I believe a tutor needs to know their students well enough to understand their personal goals, their preferred methods of learning (eg. some students may require diagrams to visualise…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not merely give additional lessons, but connect with them to gauge their individual skills and aid in further establishing them. Academic prowess is highly regarded, and to be able to watch a student grow to achieve such a goal would be very fulfilling. In my opinion, recognising…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them strategies to gain independence academically. I view tutoring as training wheels, which should come off when a student is able to consistently score well even without the tutor's help. I believe I am able to connect with students on a one to one level, breaking down…

Give them the confidence they need to stay motivated to acheive their Goals. Whether it be merely passing a class or excelling wih 99%, any improvement needs to be congratulated. As previously mentioned, I think the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to listen. If you do not listen to the students expectations and responsiveness to the material then the sessions will not be productive, and the student will not improve. My strengths are that I am an incredibly patient tutor, as well as a good listener.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show that they believe in them and their ability to succeed academically and overall. My strengths as a tutor begins with…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students understand concepts rather than simply giving them the answers. A good tutor encourages critical thinking, builds problem-solving skills, and helps students develop the confidence to work through challenges on their own. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is helping them to understand and master the basic foundations in their subjects. These are important as from these key concepts, students will build on them further so they can tackle even harder questions with confidence. A great tutor will also showcase to a student the bigger picture, and…

Often if students are seeking tutoring, they are struggling or in a place of doubt about their abilities. Build confidence and independence, not dependence. A good tutor doesn't just hand over answers they teach the student how to think through a problem, so that in the exam room, alone, the student can do it themselves. That means diagnosing the real gap (it's often two topics earlier than where the student thinks they're stuck), explaining it in…

Encouragement is the most important, but it must be coupled with good teaching. My strength would be the ability to convey the information in a form that younger students would be most likely to comprehend. Secondly I believe I have a strong grounding in English, which I think is very important because one must know something very well to teach…

Inside Mosman ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lily worked on converting between decimals, fractions, and percentages as well as tackling percentage word problems using real-life scenarios.

In Year 9, Sophie focused on understanding circle theorems—solving problems involving tangents and alternate segment theorem, and practicing correct mathematical notation.

For Year 10, Marcus consolidated skills in sketching parabolas by completing the square and identifying key features from turning point form, also using discriminant rules for axis of symmetry.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student faced challenges with time management in tests, often leaving complex calculus questions unfinished; as one tutor observed, "he needed to plan which problems to tackle first but ran out of time."

In Year 8, another student's working was described as "messy and hard to follow," especially during algebra tasks—key steps were skipped on paper, making it tough to track errors.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner forgot to complete homework on subtraction with borrowing, so most of the lesson was spent revisiting old ground rather than building new skills. This slowed overall progress and left them feeling frustrated by the end.

Recent Achievements

One Mosman Park tutor saw a Year 11 student move from hesitating over critical points in functions to independently finding x- and y-intercepts and confidently identifying maxima and minima without prompting.

A Year 9 student who used to skip over tricky worded ratio problems now tries each question solo before asking for help, neatly setting out her solutions and catching her own errors.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, Jimmy has shifted from guessing during subtraction to actively voicing his doubts and using a checklist he created to avoid place value mistakes—he finished the session by solving all borrowing questions unaided for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Claremont Community Hub & Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mosman Park Primary School.
