I'm studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Software Engineering at the University of Western Australia, where I was awarded the Global Excellence Scholarship — a $48,000 award offered only to students with an ATAR equivalence of 98.5 or above (mine was 99.5). My degree keeps my subject knowledge sharp and current: just last semester I completed multivariable calculus and physics for engineers, so I'm not teaching from distant memories of high school — I'm actively working with this material at a level well beyond the school curriculum, which means I can show students not just how a concept works, but where it leads and why it matters.
I've been tutoring Mathematics and Physics formally for two years, and the biggest lesson those years taught me is that knowing the content is only half the job — the real skill is diagnosis. A student who can't solve a projectile motion problem usually doesn't have a physics problem; they have a gap from earlier on. So I start from what the student already knows, find the missing link, and rebuild step by step. I guide with questions rather than lecturing, because when a student reaches the answer themselves, that success belongs to them — and that's what transforms their confidence. I've watched students go from dreading maths to voluntarily attempting the hardest problems on the page.
Outside of study, I'm a FIDE-rated competitive chess player, which has shaped how I stay patient, calm, and think several steps ahead — qualities I bring into every lesson, especially with students who feel anxious before assessments. I also serve as International Representative on my residential college's student council, which keeps me practised at communicating clearly with people from all backgrounds. Engineering has trained me to take large, intimidating problems and break them into small, solvable pieces — and that's exactly the method I hand to my students, from solving equations to exam technique and setting out working the way markers want to see it.
