I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help students build confidence in themselves and their ability to learn. Academic improvement is important, but students are much more likely to succeed when they feel supported, encouraged, and comfortable asking questions. A tutor should also adapt their teaching approach to suit each…

Communicate with their parents and plan a timetable for the student. To give the students the utmost attention. Show empathy towards the student. As a tutor, I can have open communication…

To help the student form a routine and improve performance in the school. Teaching the skill of learning and eventually working towards independence is very important to me. 1. To identify where the child needs help - be it in the process of solving a question, or in fact in the way they think of what the question is asking. 2. The most important thing is helping the student actually understand the material, not just memorise it. Over the course of a tutor's time with a student, the most important skill they can provide is the ability to think both critically and universally, fueled by a hunger for knowledge. That is to say, both a stronger and more capable work ethic. Analysing how a student mentally approaches problems, communicating to them precisely what their…

Inside Mount ClaremontTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jack worked through fractions and percentages, using visual models to build confidence with calculations.

For Year 10, Emily focused on all types of quadratic equations, including factorising, completing the square, and graphing quadratics from word problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah concentrated on exam revision by tackling practice questions involving linear functions and inequalities as well as a variety of trigonometry problems, especially those featuring bearings.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 trigonometry, a tutor noted "he needs to learn how to apply the methods taught, not just use them," highlighting a reliance on formulas without connecting concepts—this left him uncertain in non-standard problems.

In Year 11, one student struggled with test planning: "James should also learn to only spend a mark a minute on questions in order to not spend too much time on one solution," leading to unfinished sections despite knowing the material.

Meanwhile, in Year 7 algebra, incomplete written working and missing steps meant errors went unnoticed until revision, which delayed improvement and created frustration during practice sessions.

Recent Achievements

In Mount Claremont, a high school student who used to get stuck on quadratic equations is now confidently converting them to turning point form and tackling tougher textbook problems without hesitation.

Another older student, who previously struggled with showing his working out, has started writing out each step clearly instead of trying to solve everything mentally—a change that's made a real difference in his test results.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who once guessed at fraction questions now asks for help when unsure, leading her to correctly add and subtract fractions on her own this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Claremont Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like John XXIII College.
