Students often seek tutoring not just because they don't understand a subject, but because they lack confidence and love for learning that subject. The most important thing a tutor can try to do is to help that student find the self-belief that they are capable of mastering anything they put their mind to. My main strength as a tutor is my ability…

I feel that it is important for the tutor to help the student along their educational journey to understand the concepts that they learn in school and also allow them to be able to make sense out of it and apply it to daily life. Most students are unable to relate their academic knowledge to real-life scenarios and this often results in…

I think that it's really important to be a good listener so that you can use feedback from students to improve your teaching. Not everyone learns in the same way so it's really important to work with each student to find the learning tehniques that work best for them. It's also important to recognise that each student could prefer different…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to create an environment where the student can learn. Invoke curiosity in students' minds and the rest can automatically get fixed. My most important strength is to adjust myself to different types of students depending upon their aptitude. It is inevitable that you will sometimes find…

Illustrating the solution, explaining with the right examples, respecting everyone's views and value every question however simple it maybe. Making the discourse interesting and interactive. These are the most important things a tutor must deliver while teaching students. Simplifying complex topics with day to day examples is what I do. I will not…

I always create a safe, respectful learning space where my students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I can instil good study habits where my students become independent learners. I aim to help my students to understand, not memorise, so they grasp concepts and apply them independently. I am friendly and easy to get along…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand them. Learning new things can be overwhelming and thus remembering that your students are trying to grasp new knowledge every second is often overlooked. Being a student myself, I know the importance of needing to know even the smallest details but also finding it…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to solve problems. Being patient and understanding. I would not want my students to just meet more deadlines when it comes to learning. A tutor should also have a good understanding of the topics that they are supposed to teach, and should also be willing to adapt to ways of teaching because every student is not the same and one key cannot open all locks. I am a…

Listen to a student from the heart, lead and help a student to establish confidence of the subject. I think tutor should do everything for his or her students because after the parents only teacher is one person who can very closed for the student. For me, as a student, what I sought from my tutor was discovering how I learn best, rather than adhering to a one-size-fits-all approach. I also valued having someone with whom I could freely share my thoughts without fear of judgment, essentially a friend. Intuitive( I can understand and know when a topic boring and making it fun or finding a…

A tutor is more than just one that imparts knowledge. Any textbook, podcast or Youtube Video can do that. The power of a good tutor is in his or her ability to strengthen and encourage their students, so helping them gain some momentum to keep persevering in subjects that are challenging them. This means patiently helping the students understand…

To build intrinsic motivation. How much they value their success is up to them but their enjoyment of studying as well as how effective they are at studying are things that I can affect. Inside Mount ClaremontTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jack worked through fractions and percentages, using visual models to build confidence with calculations.

For Year 10, Emily focused on all types of quadratic equations, including factorising, completing the square, and graphing quadratics from word problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah concentrated on exam revision by tackling practice questions involving linear functions and inequalities as well as a variety of trigonometry problems, especially those featuring bearings.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 trigonometry, a tutor noted "he needs to learn how to apply the methods taught, not just use them," highlighting a reliance on formulas without connecting concepts—this left him uncertain in non-standard problems.

In Year 11, one student struggled with test planning: "James should also learn to only spend a mark a minute on questions in order to not spend too much time on one solution," leading to unfinished sections despite knowing the material.

Meanwhile, in Year 7 algebra, incomplete written working and missing steps meant errors went unnoticed until revision, which delayed improvement and created frustration during practice sessions.

Recent Achievements

In Mount Claremont, a high school student who used to get stuck on quadratic equations is now confidently converting them to turning point form and tackling tougher textbook problems without hesitation.

Another older student, who previously struggled with showing his working out, has started writing out each step clearly instead of trying to solve everything mentally—a change that's made a real difference in his test results.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who once guessed at fraction questions now asks for help when unsure, leading her to correctly add and subtract fractions on her own this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Claremont Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like John XXIII College.
