I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to empower them to become independent learners through gaining confidence in their abilities to learn. By equipping students with the tools and strategies to think critically and solve problems on their own, a tutor can instil confidence and resilience that extends beyond the…

Tutors help foreground the development of confidence in what lies within the mind of students that enhances their ability to express thoughts and opinion essential for adult life. A tutor also becomes a trustee of the student, whom insecurities are revealed, and therefore solutions can be found based on the bond created between the two. The…

A tutor should provide a safe space for the student, both academically and mentally. It is important that a tutor empathizes with the students and provide them vivid and interesting perspectives about the subjects which goes beyond school learning. Furthermore, it is needed that the tutor - student relationship be a team work, where the tutor is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to allow the student to enjoy the process of learning the material. To me, if a tutor is able to create an environment that is enjoyable as well as make the learning process enjoyable it can help the student to improve a lot quicker as they are enjoying the process more. My strongest…

Provide them with confidence: with my own experience in the subjects myself, I can show them the path they can follow to improve their marks, the advice I can give as an expert giving them encouragement that things are not hopeless, and that success is tangible. Teach them how to think, not parrot: I learnt myself in highschool english, my…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are being an attentive and listening mentor, ready to help with any issues. As a tutor, I think being able to shape and mould your lessons around the needs of the student is also a very important skill, and in doing so they can help the student achieve their goals. I think some of my…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them feel more confident in entering exams and answering questions. One major obstacle students face is not being sure whether they are 'smart enough' for an exam, and I aspire to improve my student's confidence and help them understand how to answer questions :) I…

I believe one of the things a tutor should find important is to help find coping mechanisms the students can use to ease their exam anxiety. Help the student progress, a tutor shouldn't be a nanny but rather a coach. A tutor should be someone who shows the horse where the water sources, which is/are the best one(s) and how to best drink from them rather than someone who takes a horse to a water source and makes that horse drink from it. I think that I can explain well and am…

Teach. Not just the lesson at hand, and not just the syllabus, but to teach generally, and to teach widely. Inside Mount ColahTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Liam worked on solving linear equations, including making x the subject and handling fractions and negatives.

Year 10 student Ella revised algebraic techniques by rearranging equations and tackling simultaneous equations using practice problems.

For Year 11, Sam focused on standard deviation and measures of spread in statistics, as well as representing data through cumulative histograms and Pareto charts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was hesitant to write out full working in algebra, often "prone to working on line," which led to confusion when reviewing multi-step problems.

In Year 11, one student skipped reading the textbook before lessons and attempted questions only after explanation; as a tutor noted, "I feel that he doesn't see the value in doing the work."

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student repeatedly avoided using visual aids for decimals and struggled with number placement in formal multiplication. This sometimes left them feeling stuck mid-question, unsure of the next step without external prompting.

Recent Achievements

One Mount Colah tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with algebraic concepts—this week, he completed several challenge questions almost entirely on his own and started laying out his working more clearly.

Another high schooler who'd struggled with measures of spread previously was able to tackle complex examples independently by the end of the session, after just a bit of initial guidance.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, one student who often waited for help now volunteered answers during multiplication practice and finished all ten problems without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hornsby Shire Library & Information Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount Colah Public School.
