On top of efficiently solving problems, a tutor should be able to explain to the students why it is that they are doing what they are doing. A tutor should explain why are they studying a particular topic in mathematics and what is its application. Finally, a tutor should be able to make the student enjoy what they are doing and make students look…

From my point of view, inspiring student motivation for learning and helping the student become an independent learner are the most important things a tutor can do for a student. When a tutor embodies passion for learning, students are more likely to have a positive emotional connection to learning. And in this way will inspire their motivation to…

A tutor should be able to provide lessons to a student which are tailored to their abilities and learning style. This is something which students can't always get in their regular classes and a tutor could provide through being attentive. They should also be able to make students feel confident in their abilities and iron out any weaknesses. My…

A tutor is a mentor and a friend to a student as they are coming to them when they are struggling and trusting them to build up their skills and their grades so that they can achieve their desired grade. The most important thing is trust between the tutor and student, meaning that the tutor will do right by the student. I used to struggled when I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is assist them to a point where they understand the content and can expand their knowledge without the help of a tutor, so that in examination environments they can use the knowledge and assistance a tutor provided them to understand the task and apply their knowledge to achieve their set goal.…

In my current study, the most important skills are independent learning and peer teaching. I aim to teach students how to identify their gaps and where to look, whether Google or Youtube or books or teachers. I will teach students study skills like note taking or flashcard techniques. Ideally, I want to instill the same sense of wonder and love that I have for mathematics in the students. This won't work for all students, of course, so failing that I think a tutor should be able to teach a student how to think for themselves - it's one thing to be shown how to get an answer, and it's another thing entirely to be taught how to…

One of them is to understand that all students have their own personality and style of learning. So I think for a tutor to see each student as unique is important in order to not give up on them. This way, the teaching and learning process will be more enjoyable for both parties. I am patient, and when I encounter a difficult problem, I will spend…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to have a greater willingness to learn. A tutor should foster a student to have the confidence to actively solve problems through their own volition. I believe continuous growth can be achieved by an empowered student, motivated by their innate potential to…

Make the students feel confident on themselves and making them trying out the questions independently first. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is give the student confidence that they can complete problems on their own and be successful in their studies. I touched on some of these points in my previous answers, but as a tutor I believe the ultimate goal should be to provide one's students with an academic toolbox in the form of an understanding of the fundamental principles of any given topic. By covering first principles, and providing students with problem-solving abilities, he or she can then…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is instill confidence in their students so they can tackle problems they were previously unfimiliar with on their own, as well as perform in high stress environments, such as tests. The best way to do this in my opinion is to go through practice problems with the students untill they fully…

Inside Mount Coot-thaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lauren focused on calculating area and perimeter for a housing plan, as well as applying formulas to real-world measurement scenarios.

In Year 10, Will reviewed parabolas and practiced using the quadratic formula while preparing his assignment, working through both graphing and equation-solving steps.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Lily concentrated on solving simultaneous equations by substitution and elimination, then circled back to strengthen her understanding of inequalities from earlier in the year.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student struggled with organizing notes between school and tutoring, often writing in random places and leaving their notebook at school; as a tutor noted, "notebook left at school, still needs to begin taking notes in a separate notebook." This made it harder to review methods for algebra and inequalities later.

In Year 7 maths, another student didn't complete assigned homework on time, missing practice with fractions and word problems.

A senior student relied heavily on the calculator during quadratic equations but skipped recording working—resulting in confusion when errors appeared.

The anxiety of forgetting steps showed up right before tests, leading to last-minute cramming rather than steady revision.

Recent Achievements

One Mount Coot Tha tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 10 student who, after struggling with parabolas earlier in the term, was able to complete all related questions independently by lesson's end and even explained her working out.

A Year 8 student has begun flagging specific maths problems she finds challenging rather than skipping them, showing new initiative and ownership over her learning.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who previously hesitated with times tables now confidently recalls nearly all of them and applies mental strategies for tricky ones without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kenmore Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Chapel Hill State School.
