Creating a safe and supportive learning environment, where learning could be embraced by children, rather than feeling it a mere burden of achieving expectations is important to fulfill as a tutor. As a tutor I prefer students to identify their own strengths and help them grow at their own pace, because not every child thinks and act the same way.…

Tutors should be patient when tutoring and be prepared to repeat themselves or explain something in different ways. Tutors should design lessons that are of interest to the student but are also at the appropriate level for the student's ability. Tutors should be encouraging when students do something well and supportive when students make…

Being real with your students. Your students should know that they can always count on you and that you are always there for them to get help at any time. whatever you teach should be taught in a way that they will never forget. I love to explain difficult problems in a simple way by relating it with day to day activities. As I am not very…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build confidence, provide clarity, and create a supportive learning environment. A great tutor helps a student believe in their ability to learn, breaks down tricky concepts so they feel manageable, and offers encouragement without judgment. It’s also important for a tutor to…

Give them enough confidence to at least try, even though they might not succeed. I make sure my students feel comfortable with me, so they are able to talk about their fears and what they don't know. I get to know the way they think and learn so that makes it easier for them to understand…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is tailor their approach to the student’s needs. Their learning method, their stuggles and strengths. A tutor should help develop the student's study skills, and be able to provide specific and constructive feedback. Patience and flexibility are key qualities to have because it will empower…

I believe a tutor’s most important role is to be patient and truly understand how each student learns. By breaking down concepts clearly, sharing practical strategies, and creating a supportive and encouraging environment, a tutor can help students gain confidence, retain knowledge, and genuinely enjoy the process of learning. One of my biggest…

Tutor must have patience to repeat the concepts. Preparing beforehand the lessons also helps in avoiding the confusion while teaching. Tutor can prepare homework for students to practice. As a tutor, I believe I can deliver the class starting from the basic concepts, so that students can grasp the subject from the depths. I can easily solve the…

I believe, more than anything else, that a tutoring space should feel judgement free for a student. A student should not feel hesitant to ask questions or to clarify a concept. In fact, I believe it to be a good sign if a student is able to outright say that my explanation is not what they need or understand. Fostering such a safe and trusting…

As for me, I believe that one of the most crucial things that a tutor should bring to a student is the passion for learning. We have to encourage and help them to find out the interesting of the subject they are studying I'm a good listener, a diligent person. Besides from general knowledge of the subjects, understanding the strengths as well as weaknesses of the students is a must for personal tutors. We can develop the most effective way to teach if we are fully aware of these factors. Also, one of the most important things a tutor can do is to be patient and considerate with their students. This way…

First thing is trust, the tutor should be responsible, good listener, and patient; as a result, the student will trust on him and feel more comfortable to learn. Second, the tutor should understand and analyze the student difficulties to create an individual approach for his learning. Therefore, teaching will be an easy way for the tutor and the…

The single most important aspect for a tutor is to be able to keep the student's attention; losing their focus implicates the loss of any further progress in the topic at hand and their faith in how much you can help them as a mentor. Maintaining their concentration throughout the duration of the session, while tiring at times, pays off. I believe…

listening to students and finding out what they want out of the sessions and how they prefer to learn. By doing so we can offer a method of learning that's customized to them as an individual and not as a class. Learning occurs in many formats and a tutor should provide a format that isn't inherently applied in schools - aiding in the…

Inside Mount DuneedTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Krisztian focused on multiplying and dividing fractions as well as converting between simple and complex fractions using times tables.

Year 8 student Sam worked through ratios and rates, including comparing ratios and understanding gradient, along with applying index laws to simplify expressions.

For Year 10, Emily practiced solving linear equations and explored finding x-intercepts for quadratics by factoring and using the quadratic formula.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, one student often avoided writing out working in fraction and multiplication problems, instead guessing answers when unsure—"he gets frustrated for not knowing it so blurts out a guess," as noted. This led to confusion mid-question and made it difficult to spot where thinking went off track.

In Year 10 algebra, untidy layout meant numbers like '9' resembled a 'y', causing mix-ups during graphing tasks and making it hard to follow steps ("organisation and handwriting...hard to tell the difference"). In both cases, unclear written work slowed progress and left errors hidden until the very end.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mount Duneed noticed one Year 8 student has started correcting their own working steps, a real shift from earlier sessions where they'd just wait for the answer.

In Year 10, another student who struggled with trig equations last term is now able to use both sine and cosine rules accurately during problem sets—they completed a set unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised themselves by finishing all problems independently after previously needing lots of encouragement just to start.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Grovedale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount Duneed Regional Primary School.
