I think it is very important that a tutor really listens to what their student needs in order to cater to these needs. I always like to ask my students how they usually study and what they have found works best for them. I also like to introduce my students to other methods of learning that I believe may be beneficial to them, when working with me…

A tutor should be patient and should be able to accomodate oneself with the students. The main aim of the tutor should be to suit to the needs of the child. I am extremely patient with students and I can listen to all that they have to offer. I can deal with kids since I have a younger brother. My biggest strength is that I wouldn't hesitate to…

I always say that the most important thing is being patient. I know that every child is different, so tutors have to adapt to each child and teach children in the appropriate way, since each student understands subjects differently. I am a young person, so I am able to understand a child in many situations. I am aware of mental health and the…

A very personal thing I like to teach my students is to pay attention to the small details. Each and every word, each and every equation. It is the ability to start at a granular level that makes the grand ideas and concepts easier to understand. My strength is really my ability to understand the student well. I believe different methods of…

I think the best thing a tutor can do for their students is show that they are interested in them as individuals. I think tutors should find out what their students are interested in and use this as a tool in teaching. Being able to make a connection like this makes the experience more enjoyable and educational for both student and tutor. I think…

I think that a tutor should help foster understanding of difficult concepts so that the student is able to do the work themselves, rather than doing the work for them. Additionally, going over the work with them, and showing them how they can improve is important. Ensuring that they understand ways they can get better helps more than telling them,…

A tutor’s role goes beyond just explaining content. I think it is about identifying how a student learns best and adapting strategies to suit that. I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is empower the student to become a more confident and self-sufficient learner, giving them tools and strategies they can carry forward long…

In my opinion it is extremely important to ensure the learner knows that it is safe to not succeed at first as learning is a process full of unsuccessful attempts. This will allow students to participate fearlessly in a tutoring session. Building that trust and relationship with students is an integral part of tutoring. It will enable students to…

Inside Mount Gravatt EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Petra worked on drafting a short story for an upcoming English assessment and practiced integer calculations, focusing on accuracy.

Year 9 student Mia focused on algebraic substitution by working through school quiz problems and also revised key skills in solving equations.

For Year 10, Jay tackled log laws and long division, rounding out the session with targeted algebra revision to address areas identified in recent classwork.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Maths, a student missed several homework tasks and did not bring the required workbook ("Homework book was not bought"), which limited practice with algebraic questions.

In Year 11 English, another student needed repeated reminders to proofread essays and struggled with sentence structure; as one tutor observed, "Her sentence and paragraph construction needs to be improved."

For a Year 7 Maths learner, over-reliance on calculators during percentage conversions led to errors in tests.

When written solutions in Year 10 Maths lacked step-by-step justification, sign errors crept in unnoticed—making it harder to spot misunderstandings during review.

Recent Achievements

A Mount Gravatt East tutor noticed a big change in one Year 11 student who, after struggling with complex problem-solving, now confidently analyses and solves multi-step maths questions without hesitation.

In Year 9 English, another student went from submitting rough drafts full of tense errors to producing a well-structured essay draft with only minor grammatical mistakes—she now proofreads her work before handing it in.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who used to avoid tricky fraction problems has begun tackling them head-on and even checks her answers for accuracy before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Gravatt Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Queensland Pathways State College - Mt Gravatt Campus.
