I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand their point of view. From my experience as a student, I struggled with issues inside and outside the classroom, and some teachers just stacked on the workload with no recognition of how much it wasn't helping. It was my ancient teacher who helped me enjoy studying as he…

Tutoring is mainly about facilitating the students understanding of concepts, but the tutor should also aim to foster a drive in the student to understand why they are struggling with the respective topic and a will to seek a solution on their own. The tutor should eventually seek to equip students with self-awareness and a drive for…

This way of carrying yourself can be summed up in five words: the relentless pursuit of knowledge. I wish to bring that mindset to the students I tutor so they not only make the most of their learning in the…

One of the most important things would be the environment the tutor and student are in. The more comfortable but slightly stressed-out the students are, the more productive the tutoring session would be. Another essential aspect of tutoring would be the ability for the tutor to deeply understand the concept themselves in order for them to simplify…

Inside Mount LewisTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Lily focused on mastering simultaneous equations and exploring trigonometry, including how to apply key formulae.

For Year 10, Ayaan worked through financial maths concepts such as calculating simple and compound interest, alongside tackling rates and ratios using real-world scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily concentrated on analysing literary techniques in English texts and interpreting film techniques for upcoming assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often arrived without having completed homework, which led to gaps when tackling new algebra and indices problems—"she forgot the basics of squares and roots," a tutor noted.

In Year 11, missing scheduled study plan check-ins left one student feeling unprepared for upcoming exams, despite understanding material in lessons.

Another Year 9 learner found it difficult to recall surface area and volume units because prior revision was limited to easier questions, avoiding more complex multi-step worded tasks. This pattern meant that when unexpected question types appeared, confidence quickly dropped and time was lost deciding how to begin.

Recent Achievements

One Mount Lewis tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to freeze when faced with simultaneous equations now actively asks to revisit the topic and is working through problems with far less hesitation.

Another high schooler recently received an A and a B on her assessment, after weeks of practicing new techniques and taking more responsibility for double-checking her homework—she only missed one question this time.

In a Year 4 session, a student who was initially unsure about mean and median started remembering definitions independently and could answer review questions correctly after some extra practice.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Canterbury Bankstown Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount Lewis Infants School.
