For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help students stop fearing what they don’t know. Once that fear is gone, they can focus on real learning instead of just chasing marks. A tutor’s role is to guide them to see mistakes as part of the process, build their confidence, and make knowledge something they’re curious about rather…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach the student to enjoy learning, and impart a good studying method. After all, even the best tutor cannot help an unmotivated student, and a lack of self-motivation is the biggest obstacle that many underperforming students fail to overcome. I am good at following the student's pace.…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to create a supportive learning environment, build their confidence, and foster independent thinking. A good tutor doesn’t just provide answers, but helps students develop the skills and strategies to solve problems on their own. Encouraging curiosity, patience, and a growth…

To me, the most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and make students feel comfortable asking questions. As a student myself, I know how frustrating it can be when you are stuck on a small part of a topic but have no one to ask. I believe a tutor should listen carefully, never make a student feel that their question is too basic, and…

The most important part of being a tutor is being friendly and available so students feel comfortable asking questions about what they find difficult. Firstly, a tutor can give guiding questions instead of displaying the answers straightaway. This way, the students can be prompted to think of a way to get to the solution. Secondly, I believe a tutor should build the foundation first before going deeper into the subject. I am a patient person. I would give time for the students to digest the…

The most important thing that any tutor can do for a student is to be a good listener. Knowing a student's expectations is really important in planning effective tutoring techniques. Excellent, ongoing communication & a great first experience with our son's Year 12 tutor. We look forward to the rest of this journey.
Heather Goode, Mount Osmond

Inside Mount OsmondTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lucy worked on consolidating her understanding of index laws and practiced adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions.

In Year 10, Divyanshu tackled differentiating simple rational functions using first principles in Maths and focused on stoichiometry and unit conversions like %w/v and mol/L in Chemistry.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Zac reviewed tricky chain rule questions before learning the product rule in differentiation, then moved to Chemistry to deepen his grasp of chromatography concepts such as Rf values and retention time.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Chemistry, one student's written responses often lacked precise terminology and structure when explaining solubility or drawing organic molecules. As a tutor noted, "He struggles to view the entire problem and develop a 'game plan' before tackling a question," which led to confusion in multi-step tasks like titrations or back titration calculations.

In Year 8 Maths, another student hesitated to write out full working for negative numbers or complex fractions—sometimes only attempting parts they felt confident with—making it difficult to identify where misunderstandings occurred during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

A Mount Osmond tutor noticed Zac, a Year 9 student who previously struggled to write at length, completed an entire essay on his own and soon after scored an A on his English assignment—he's now identifying weak points in his writing without prompting.

Meanwhile, Divyanshu in senior high school chemistry has moved from needing support with ionic equations to independently solving unfamiliar problems and accurately suggesting chemical reagents during practice.

In a younger session, Lucy started tackling fraction questions she once avoided and now applies index laws with minimal help, even asking for extra practice when unsure.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Seymour College.
