Most important would definitely be effort towards a student. No student would want a biology tutor who does not have the best interest in them and would definitely not want a tutor who is giving 50% of their efforts. Another important thing a tutor can do for a student is show passion and that they care, and that they are someone the students…

I consider the most important attributes that a biology tutor can have for a student is the ability to listen, to be patient, and to be able to explain concepts and questions in more ways than one. I personally struggled during my final years of school (11 and 12). Despite the struggles, I applied all my effort and learnt valuable lessons. Through…

The most important things a biology tutor can do are build confidence, make concepts genuinely understandable, and adapt to the student’s needs—because once a student believes they can do it and actually understands the “why,†their results improve naturally. My strengths as a tutor are clear communication, patience, and adaptability—I…

A tutor is a means of reassurance, while tutors aren't expected to be an all knowing textbook, students find reassurance knowing that someone with more knowledge and experience are within an arm's reach and are able to lend a hand. As a biology tutor, I will do my best to be a friendly source of aid that is almost always available. As a tutor I…

A tutor should provide tailored help to each student by understanding their weaknesses and the areas which they find difficult to foster growth and improvement over time. This is synonymous with giving students strategies to be independent learners and more effective learners. Alongside this, a biology tutor can motivate a student through their…

One of the most important things tutor can do for a student is provide them with a lot of feedbacks as well as lots of revision. It is from feedback that students understand where they have been going wrong and how to improve on it. Revision is essential because knowing content is one thing, learning to apply them is another. From experience, I…

Just being a support for the student in question. Now, obviously, the first idea to jump to there is academically, and this is super important, of course, but also school is a naturally difficult time for a lot of students for a large variety of reasons, and even if the tutor nor student realize it, being there to help dealing with it is a massive…

Inside Mount VernonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jonathon practised reading tables and graphs, including picture graphs and two-way tables, then worked on using conjunctions in sentences.

In Year 9, Vangie focused on algebraic techniques such as rearranging equations to make a chosen variable the subject and applied these skills to questions involving trapezium dimensions.

For Year 11, Amaan tackled polynomials and learned to apply the quadratic formula through targeted examples from his current schoolwork.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student struggled to show working consistently in algebra and trigonometry, as a tutor observed: "He needs to be disciplined when showing working for a question," which sometimes meant marks were lost even when answers were correct.

In Year 11 English, slow linking of ideas led to time management issues during short-answer analysis.

For a younger student (Year 4), handwriting remained difficult—writing on regular lines was much messier than on practice sheets, making it hard to read his work.

During senior maths revision, one Year 10 student relied heavily on looking back through notes rather than recalling processes independently, slowing progress.

Recent Achievements

One Mount Vernon tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to rush through algebra tests now taking time to check his work, spotting and fixing minor mistakes without prompting.

In Year 10, another student initially struggled with using the sine and cosine rules for triangles but last week solved multi-step problems independently, even explaining why each step made sense.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4 who previously hesitated to read aloud is now volunteering to summarise stories after reading them, showing clear progress in both fluency and willingness to engage.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Valley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Irfan College.
