It is highly important for a tutor to listen to their student. Having interest and possibly even enjoying what they are learning assists with retaining information they receive, so it is important to take in and consider students' requests or suggestions for the lessons so that they can continue to be engaged in lessons. Listening and being…

Identifying areas that need to be strengthened and setting appropriate tasks to get the student to understand the questions being asked and how to solve them. Teaching study methods is also something that can help their performance, particularly in Science. Many mistakes are made from misinterpreting the questions. I try and speak clearly, ask…

I understand that teachers don't always have time to help students one-on-one and that tutors can help bridge the gap. I believe that learning is an exponential process, so a small victory in a tutoring session can lead to enormous benefits in the student's future. I am passionate about enabling students to maximise their…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is be patient and supportive. Different people learn different things in different ways, and at different rates. A tutor must cater for that, and not skip over important things that students have not yet understood. A tutor must use the method of explaining/teaching that students will understand. I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide support. Mathematics does not come easy to everyone, and in fact can cause some stress, especially in the the later years of schooling. Therefore, the tutor should be there to provide support and to ensure that the student is comfortable with the work. I believe my strengths are…

A tutor can play a very important role in motivating the student so that he can understand and achieve. Thus, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is instilling a strong belief in them that they can achieve whatever they want, provided they are giving their best. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student in primary or high school education is to instill confidence in them to become a curious learner. In order to progress in their academics, students need to feel as though their learning goals are attainable. A tutor can encourage a positive outlook on grades, to foster the belief that…

One of the most crucial contributions a tutor makes involves delivering personalized instruction. In traditional classroom settings, accommodating diverse learning preferences is challenging. Tutors, however, with their 1-on-1 or small group approach, offer detailed and customized lessons. This allows students to absorb knowledge more effectively,…

Giving constructive feedback. Answer any questions the student has. Give advice and direction for general exam strategies. In uni or highschool, many students complain that the teachers or lecturers aren't able to explain properly or give any useful feedbacks. Therefore I think the 3 items above are the most important in helping the student to…

A tutor should be able to adapt their teaching style and tailor it for their students. The lessons should be interactive and engaging so the student is always focused on the class. Inside MulgraveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 Oscar reviewed circle theorems involving intersecting chords, secants and tangents, as well as tackled sketching parabolas to build confidence in algebraic graphing.

For Year 7 Hayley, sessions focused on strengthening her grasp of the distributive property and using visual approaches to clarify key math operations.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Hayley practiced explaining her problem-solving steps from a recent test and explored logic-based activities like Rebus puzzles and story riddles to enhance critical thinking alongside mathematics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, one student did not bring class notebooks or show workings with homework; "did not have workings to the homework I have given so reassigned it, to be completed with workings." This made it hard to spot where confusion started in algebra.

A Year 7 student avoided word problems, losing motivation when faced with longer questions—especially in story riddles—so didn't get full exposure to key reasoning skills.

In VCE maths, another relied heavily on notes and rarely attempted questions independently during revision sessions, leading to missed feedback opportunities before tests.

Recent Achievements

One Mulgrave tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to link math to real-life scenarios now using calculations confidently in the context of his athletic training, even initiating discussions about applying statistics from sports science.

In a recent high school session, Hayley identified where she typically lost track in multi-step linear equations and independently developed an organised approach that helped her resolve several story riddles without prompting.

Meanwhile, a primary student who used to avoid worded math problems now spots her own errors as she explains solutions aloud and manages to answer parts of challenging written questions on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John Vianney's School.
