The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them the confidence that they have the ability to learn. Tutors shouldn't be doing the work for the student but rather giving them the tools required to continue to grow and become active learners even after the tutoring session has ended. I am very patient, kind and empathetic and I…

Tutors are there to make sure students fully understand the subjects taught in their classes, whether this be to engage them with new work outside of the classroom, aid them with homework or just spark more enjoyment in the subject. My main strength would be my ability to teach with different perspectives, this being an ability to explain a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to act as a facilitator, to give them the tools to help them realise their full potential. Each child has the ability to thrive and succeed, to help them discover and be motivated by this is the most important thing a tutor can do for their student. One of my greatest strengths as a tutor is…

I truly believe that teaching students how to learn and find their own motivations to study is the best thing a tutor will do. This is a skill that will last a lifetime. I’ve done a lot of complicated study and am well versed in breaking large concepts into smaller, more manageable ideas which would aid me as a…

I believe a tutor should be understanding, patient, passionate, and encouraging. I had a tutor for my HSC and I believe that to gain a strong connection with the student, you must be their biggest cheerleader. You must be there to support them through their obstacles and successes and be an ear to listen when things become overwhelming. A tutor…

Often in school, teachers teach a subject in only one way rather than catering for each individual in the class, which can often make students feel 'dumb' or hate the subject. I believe the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to show them the many different ways to approach the subject and help them to find a new way that…

Foster self-confidence in their subject areas, as the main hurdle many students face, is self-doubt in their ability, which causes them to give up on their courses. I know the content very well and have helped many of my peers overcome things they don't understand in the syllabus. So I am familiar with many of the common problems students face in…

Help students through their learning journey whilst also giving them the independence to take responsibility for their learning. Assisting students when they need help is important but it also just as important for students to push themselves with harder questions, turning to the tutor as the last resort. A tutor is meant to help the student push…

Inside NarrabeenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sienna worked through times tables, addition and subtraction, plus tackled word problems to strengthen number sense.

In Year 9, Josh focused on graphing linear equations and solving systems of two equations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily reviewed surds and practiced factorising and expanding quadratic expressions, using step-by-step examples for clarity.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on rationalisation in algebra often rushed, skipping steps and losing track of logical progression—"it is important his setting out is logical and able to be followed as he progresses," noted the tutor.

In Year 11, time management issues during past test reviews meant planning was inconsistent, with key questions left unfinished under pressure.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student sometimes avoided drawing large diagrams or writing clearly in geometry, leading to confusion when revisiting their work.

A Year 3 learner struggled to recall times tables without written support, which slowed problem-solving during complex addition tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Narrabeen recently saw a Year 10 student, who previously hesitated to check her own work, begin identifying her mistakes during topic tests and explaining how she'd approach those questions differently next time.

In a high school session, another student who often relied on prompts started attempting practice questions independently for an upcoming assessment without waiting for hints, showing new initiative.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who struggled with times tables earlier now writes all of them out independently on paper and solves multi-step subtraction equations with far less support than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dee Why Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Rose Catholic Primary School.
