A tutor plays a crucial role in a student's learning journey, and there are several important things a tutor can do to effectively support their students: Every student is unique. A good tutor takes the time to understand the student's learning style, strengths, weaknesses, and goals. This understanding helps tailor the tutoring sessions to meet…

One of the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give the student motivation to learn and ultimately excel academically. In a more practical sense, a tutor's ability to explain concepts and ideas that broaden the student's perspective and understanding of a certain topic is another essential influence a tutor can have on a…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is lead by example. A student needs to see that their tutor is just as committed to their success as they are. That means showing rigor, dedication, and a strong work ethic. I always make sure my lessons are well-prepared, structured, and clear, so the student feels supported and can focus…

The best thing I can do is to generate interest of the student in that particular subject. That way, the student can get his own way at that subject later on. I can grasp the concept as quickly as possible and make the best and the easiest approach to teach the child. In mathematics, I excel in topics like Trigonometry, Calculus and general…

I believe that if a tutor is kind, patient and shows respect, they will see greater results with their students. In order for effective learning, it is paramount to create a distraction-free, positive environment, and prepare well-thought out lessons ahead of time. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, I think that if a tutor is ready to motivate,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is bring him to enjoy the subject he is learning. Education is a necessary part of life and to get the most out of ones education they should like what they are learning. After that, it is important to make sure the student is confident in their abilities and does not fall into a spiral of…

The most important thing is definitely being patient and kind. A lot of people sometimes forget children/teens are not fully functioning adults yet, and they’re learning. Therefore, it’s very important to push them to the best they can do. By being indulgent and firm at the same time, I believe a tutor can get children to be their very best,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be there for them and listen. It is important for students to know that mistakes are supposed to be made, and as tutors we are here to guide them through their mistakes. Furthermore, our role as tutors is to help children do the work, not do the work for them. Sometimes all students need is…

My maths teacher always said that giving students 'a spark in their chest to learn' was the most valuable thing that a teacher could give to students. I absolutely agree. A tutor needs to be able to imbibe in a student, a way of thinking about things, instead of just spoonfeeding the content and making everything easy for the student. It is very important to clear the basics of the student before anything else. Once the base is strong enough, the student will be able to handle any level of complexity in things. I…

Inside New FarmTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ben practised identifying and writing sentences with metaphors, similes, and personification to boost creative language skills.

For Year 11, Ella worked through her Maths Essentials assignment—focusing on completing the conclusion section—and reviewed feedback for her English IA2 task.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Jack explored chemical stoichiometry by balancing equations and briefly reviewed a recent maths assignment for clarity.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often arrived unprepared, with forgotten materials and assignments, which made it difficult to settle quickly into lessons.

In Year 10 Maths, he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors, resulting in more time spent retracing calculations than progressing.

A senior Chemistry student became sidetracked by unrelated physics content during revision, leading to incomplete review of essential topics before an upcoming assessment.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 English draft was overloaded with information but lacked clear referencing—feedback given wasn't fully addressed in the final submission, leaving assignment requirements unmet and creating last-minute stress.

Recent Achievements

One New Farm tutor noted that a Year 11 student who had previously hesitated to ask for help is now openly seeking clarification during sessions, making it much easier to target her learning needs.

In a recent Year 9 session, a student who struggled with focus earlier in the term stayed engaged through the whole lesson and completed his assignment draft with only minor corrections needed.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student showed new independence by attempting every question unprompted in his maths test—something he avoided before—and finished the series pattern problems entirely on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as New Farm Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holy Spirit School.
