Firstly, I believe the philosophy of "Teaching to fish rather than giving a fish. " It suggests that the tutor has a responsibility to inspire her students to take further exploration in the subject and cultivate good learning habits. Secondly, I think encouragement is essential in tutoring. Being as a tutor, I would let my student know that they…

A tutor must give a student confidence and help them to not be overwhelmed by new topics. Once a student believes they can learn something, it is much easier to actually learn it. Tutors must also be personal and understand what method of teaching is most effective for each individual. As a recently graduated student, I am able to understand how…

I believe it is integral to grasp the individual students learning style and tailor my lessons accordingly. As a part of this, it's also important to learn what doesn't work for them, and avoid these techniques. For example, an English teacher might teach them poetic terms by getting the student to write out definitions. If a students doesn't…

In the teaching phase, student-focused teaching would be my method of teaching, which is to discover what the students need instead of dumping knowledge, whilst showing respect and understanding. I think the most important quality to bring to tuition is a sense of drive to motivate students. Often High school students are unaware of the importance or usefulness of academics and I believe it is important to also educate them on why it is important to achieve good grades. High academic achievement can give a student a plethora of pathways in…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is relate to their learning. The most important things a tutor can do are: 1. Provide a safe and supportive environment where the student feels comfortable sharing their concerns. This helps to identify the student’s preferred learning style and areas to focus on. 2. Give the student the tools they need to learn on their own. Instead of just giving solutions, a tutor…

Inside NewsteadTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Emily worked on mean, median, and mode for large data sets as well as converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages.

In Year 10, Max tackled logarithmic function evaluation and manipulation alongside practice with trigonometric identities using diagrams.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student focused on applying the product and quotient rules for derivatives to exponentials and explored optimisation problems involving stationary points and their nature.

Recent Challenges

In senior maths, several students struggled to begin unfamiliar worded problems—one Year 12 student "didn't know where to start" with complex exponentials and vectors, leading to stalled working and loss of confidence.

Another found it difficult forming the initial equation for optimisation questions, hesitating over which values to use or how to construct a triangle diagram.

In Year 8 algebra, small calculation slips (such as reversing digits or swapping x/y in slope formulae) appeared when students didn't write out each step, making errors harder to spot.

When this happened during timed revision, accuracy dropped and test marks suffered.

Recent Achievements

One Newstead tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to freeze when faced with worded problem-solving questions—now she confidently talks through her strategy aloud before writing, showing much more initiative than last term.

In a recent high school session, a Year 11 student who once doubted her trig skills surprised herself by not only recalling the chain rule after three tries but then independently spotting and correcting errors during revision.

Meanwhile, a primary student made progress by regularly asking for help instead of guessing when stuck, finishing all assigned maths tasks without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bulimba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fortitude Valley State Secondary College.
