A tutor can be the perfect guidance. Besides, a tutor should have abilities to understand the performance of an individual and carry on the task in an easy and correct way. A tutor always should be smart and capable to conduct the task as per the student's abilities. As I have already worked as a teacher for more than three years before. The…

A tutor needs to be encouraging and patient. Learning some of these concepts requires hours of practice and the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence. I am empathetic, patient, and encouraging which I think fosters the greatest learning opportunities among students. I am also inextinguishably passionate about maths…

The most important thing for the tutor is To provide confidence to the student in himself and show him the way to how he can solve the problem himself. Make him self reliant. To be able to show the practical relevance and their usage using simple and easy to remember tricks and examples from everyday life. Another of my key strengths is to…

I believe that tutors must have a good attitude and genuinely enjoy the concepts and the subject. Without this, the student will most likely find the tutoring bland and boring, which would reduce their engagement and their overall performance and knowledge in the subject. My experience as a tennis coach has shown me how different students learn at…

Being able to help a student achieve future problems on their own by helping them understand how to do a problem rather than just providing the solution is one of the most important things I consider a tutor can do for a student. I also think it's important to be prepared to help them with their topics by preparing first myself. I believe my…

Inspire students to understand the importance and broader concepts within mathematics. Also translate the mathematics to a way a student can understand - perhaps look at it more graphically, or by using a real world example - and by breaking down a complex problem into simple, easy to understand parts. I think I have a very versatile…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to actually listen to their student. If they are not being receptive to feedback, and the student is not learning, then there is no progress being made. Rather, there has to be an active conversation between tutor and student that helps communicate the student's needs. I think I'm really receptive to a…

The most important thing is to develop the students confidence and give them the ability to take on problems on their own later down the track. I feel that this is the main key to success as without this ability the student will give up half way. Empowerment and showing them that it isn't as hard as what they think is crucial. I am a very patient…

A tutor should be patient and never say something is easy. Understand them and their learning habits. If a tutor does not understand their student, they can never excel at tutoring that student or almost anyone. Helping a student grow and evolve. Modern curriculum is mostly based on a thought process that works for most students. But not for all, and school teachers don't usually have the capacity to take care of all the students individually. That's where a tutor can help. Everybody thinks about and understand scientific ideas and theories in their own, personal way. A tutor can lead the…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to inspire confidence, make learning enjoyable, and nurture independent thinking. A tutor has the opportunity to encourage confidence in students. Not solely confidence that they can achieve highly, but confidence that they can give anything a go and learn and improve as they do. A tutor can present things in an engaging way to encourage the student to be open-minded to things they may have discounted because they seem…

Inside North BrightonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ben practised multiplication facts for 2s and 3s, strengthened understanding of place value up to 1,000 using visual aids, and worked on reading aloud narrative texts with a focus on literal comprehension.

In Year 6, Chloe reviewed how to express decimal numbers as percentages and vice versa, and solved problems involving percentages of amounts and simplifying ratios.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Mason completed NAPLAN numeracy practice questions with calculator use, focusing on relationships between fractions, decimals and percentages as well as correct terminology for equivalence in fractions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student struggled to organise written work clearly in maths, especially when labelling headings on the place value board—this led to confusion between hundredths and hundreds of thousands, as one tutor observed: "Headings were mixed up, making it tricky to keep track of values."

In Year 10 algebra sessions, skipping working steps meant sign errors went unnoticed until final answers were checked.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student avoided reading unfamiliar words fully and guessed based on context rather than decoding; this slowed their progress with new vocabulary and affected comprehension during narrative tasks.

Recent Achievements

One North Brighton tutor noticed a Year 10 student, Brooke, who used to rely heavily on her calculator for complex equations now choosing to solve algebraic problems by hand and accurately explaining her steps—a real shift towards independent problem-solving.

In another session, a Year 8 student, Prajna, who was previously hesitant with division facts of 9 now recalls them instantly and recently completed BEDMAS exercises without errors.

Meanwhile, Jye in Year 4 has started self-correcting his reading out loud; instead of skipping tricky words as he did before, he now pauses to decode them using strategies discussed together.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brighton Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Brighton Secondary School.
