The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to maintain clear communication. Only through effective communication, tutors can track students' progress, understand what students are seeking to learn, and which areas are they having trouble with. And then tutors can design specific teaching materials, and deliver them effectively. I…

The most important thing is to build a tutor can do is to build a good relationship and a comfortable environment for the student. After that has been established, it is very important for the tutor to guide the student to an understanding rather than telling them the answer. My biggest strength is my ability to bring trick or complicated problems…

Give them time and space. I believe these two aspects are the most important thing we can give students but understanding how to manage these two factors as a tutor we give the private space for them to develop as well as provide them with help when they require us. I am very patient and outgoing, therefore it is easy for students to ask me…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure that the student fully understands the content being taught at their level. I think it can be quite easy for a tutor to rush or even skip the easy stuff in favour for the more interesting, harder content, which can leave a student lost and feeling inadequate. I think I…

Helping them in a way that allows them to complete questions on their own, but also learn from the tutor. I believe it is vital that a student feels as though they have accomplished something at the end of each session and that there is a sense of progression felt for the student after each session. A tutor should be able to make the student work at a comfortable pace that does not stress them out or make them feel uncomfortable. Lastly, I believe a…

Self-belief is one of the important traits that a tutor can generate for their students. The ability to understand and apply concepts logically can only be generated if a tutor is able to generate interest in that particular subject. Generating curiosity, self-belief, and giving a platform to children to be able to express his concerns would be my…

A tutor helps create a safe space for students to learn in a non-classroom setting either online via a virtual meeting or in-person. The ultimate goal of a tutor is to improve a students academic performance. However a tutor can also teach a student how to study smartly by emphasising the importance of concepts, improving their confidence, test…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is understanding their weak areas. This helps them to adjust teaching materials and techniques to best meet the students' needs. This may range from using more techniques such as mnemonics (my personal favourite) as well as emphasising certain subject areas over others. My strengths as a tutor…

Inside North TurramurraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lucas practised simple division and tackled worded problems to strengthen his foundational numeracy.

For Year 11, Sophia focused on normal distribution and worked through her areas of difficulty using trial HSC exam papers.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student James reviewed the balance of payments, covering both current and capital accounts, and explored how exchange rates are affected by demand and supply for the Australian dollar, using past HSC short-answer questions for practice.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student working on calculus struggled to set out homework clearly, which made it difficult to identify where his thinking broke down—"his understanding of calculus & his homework setting out" was a tutor's observation.

In Year 11 Economics, one student often skipped writing formulas for opportunity cost and labour force participation rate, so errors crept in unnoticed when revising calculations.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student avoided showing division steps in maths problems; as the tutor noted, "divisions and reading questions" required extra attention because missing working led to repeated confusion over basic procedures.

Recent Achievements

One North Turramurra tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 12 student who, after struggling to tell apart the different balance of payments accounts in economics, now accurately distinguishes between them and explains what drives deficits or surpluses.

In Year 11 maths, another student had trouble with fractions on a previous test but recently solved fraction problems independently, showing the extra practice paid off.

Meanwhile, a primary school student who used to rush through questions has started pausing to read each one carefully before answering—a noticeable change in approach during recent sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Ives Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Turramurra North Public School.
