To give them confidence and make them feel good about themselves. There is nothing more counter-productive than making a student feel disheartened and bad about themselves, since self-doubt yields anxiety and often poor performance in exams. Establishing a basis of trust is vital for the success of the student, so that they feel in a safe space to…

A tutor should be able to help the student in a personalized way. Beside that, we should work with the students as a companion rather than a teacher to remove the gap and create a comfortable environment. Some students might find the subject a bit scary for many reasons. I believe that my ability to create a friendly and stress less atmosphere…

In my honest opinion, offering to help with their academic performances is not the most important things but it is to be there for my student. To be a supportive person who respect their personality, their actions, their way of life. I might not be the smartest tutor who can help them solve every homework but I will be there for them to listen, to…

Patiently teaching a student can help the student increase their confidence and their trust in themselves that they are able to do something really creative. The bond between a student and a tutor is a really strong one because good and dedicated tutoring can bring out a positive change in a student. I am a determined teacher whose aim is to make…

Inspire. Children are an inspiration to their teachers. As mentioned before, children are an inspiration to me since I get to learn from them as much as they get tutored from me. Understanding and patient. A lot of parents and teachers lose their patience and become unempathetic while teaching little children, however they're still learning and…

There are two most important things that students can do for a student. One is to know how to apply suitable methods to answer students' confusion and guide students in the right direction. The other thing is like what I mentioned, tutor needs to hav their openness, such as accessibility, availability, involvement, and empathy. The t should…

Depending on how much help the student needs, the tutor might need to help them regain the basics of the subject. Further and simplified explanation is crucial to such a type of student. Students who question their abilities need reinforcement of their knowledge through exercises, feedback and encouragement from the tutor. For those who wish to…

To me, listening is definitely first and foremost because it doesn't matter how good I am at teaching if I'm not able to listen and pay attention to addressing the student's specific needs. Getting students to apply concepts themselves is also critical, as understanding only works when it becomes practical. As an Ext 2 English student teaching at…

The most important thing for a tutor is to increase the confidence of the students. As I have seen from the past experiences, most of the students have the ability to score good grades but due to the lack of confidence in the answer, they tend to doubt themselves and mess things up in the exam. Hence boosting the student's confidence while…

Tutors need to adjust their teaching methods to meet the learning needs of each individual student. Many students struggle with self-confidence in certain subjects, and tutors can play a…

The best thing a tutor can do is create an open, collaborative learning environment that instils confidence in their students to learn any concept necessary. I am never afraid of questions as a tutor. In fact, I encourage them because I believe asking questions is the best way to track a student's progress. As a student, I often felt answers…

The most crucial role of a tutor is to avoid skipping steps unless the student fully comprehends the material. Observing problem-solving methods can be helpful, but it's the student's grasp of the logical progression behind solving problems that enables them to excel. I strive to leverage my communication skills and adaptability to discern and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be a kind, and patient individual. So often people don’t want to ask for help especially students since they fear being judged or that their question won’t get answered. This is why I think being someone your student can trust is very important in helping them learn. Patient, good…

I always find people learn best when they're comfortable and truly believe they can master the concept. Therefore, I would say the most important thing for a tutor is to build a mutual respect with their student. From there encouragement, communication, and teaching is much easier. Although I have a good knowledge off mathematics and the sciences,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be patient. Everyone learns their own way and in their own time. It is our responsibility to help students figure out how they learn so they can better understand the content that is being delivered. My strengths are my calm nature, patience and ability to understand how people think. These…

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ava practised rearranging equations and explored scientific notation and unit conversions using real-world examples.

For Year 10, Emily focused on trigonometry—specifically compass bearings and finding areas of non-right angled triangles—and reviewed worded problems involving angles of elevation and depression.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student James tackled exam preparation by working through past HSC papers and refining his annotated formula sheet to target specific gaps in understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student needed frequent prompts before starting questions—she needed to be shown the values and process before working out what to do—which reflected low confidence and hesitation when facing new material, especially in worded problems.

A Year 11 student showed frustration and lost motivation during unfamiliar algebraic tasks, often stopping midway if unsure of the next step; this made progress slow, particularly under test conditions.

In Year 10, messy written work meant formulas were forgotten or misapplied: "setting out of her notes was missing key formulas," a tutor noted. Key information sometimes stayed in their head instead of being written down, causing confusion during multi-step calculations.

Recent Achievements

A North Wollongong tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who used to hesitate during trigonometry sessions now confidently identify which formulas to use and work through multi-step problems with minimal guidance.

In Year 9, another student has begun correcting their own errors mid-question and now asks for tougher algebraic rearranging challenges instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who previously relied on the tutor for every step managed to complete all unit conversions independently in their last session, finishing a full worksheet without needing reminders or corrections.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mobile Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts.
