A student comes to a tutor because they struggle to understand the knowledge and they cannot communicate their struggles in school, hence they look up to us. So its very important to understand their problems, get simple solutions which makes it easier for them to grasp and then apply them. I believe my strengths are communication, making students…

The most important role of a tutor is to make sure students truly understand concepts in a way that allows them to apply them in practice. Beyond that, it’s about giving them the right amount of guidance so they can eventually solve problems independently. I think effective tutoring strikes a balance between support and encouraging self…

I believe a tutor shouldn't just focus on helping out their students during sessions. Tutors should be focused on making plans before their sessions, learning from their students' strengths and weaknesses. They should be passionate about their students' grades as much as their own. My strengths as a tutor include: - Taking notes of students'…

Helping the student not only improve their studies, but learn how to better study and learn independently when at home/in school. It's one thing to be working in a short tutoring session, and another to continue the work in ones own time. I am able to empathise with students and work with them on how they learn best (which teaching methods and…

I believe each student has a set goal in their minds. Therefore, the most important thing that I think I can do for a student, is to make sure they reach their desired goal and preferably even surpass it. This will teach them that they can achieve anything as long as they put in the work and come in with the right attitude. I am very attentive and…

The three most essential things a tutor can do for a student are academic advice, human connection, and consistency. When these three things are combined, a young learner may be able to completely rethink a class, subject, or school as a whole. Energy and originality in the learning environment. the capacity to simply express complex ideas.…

I consider encouragement and patience as the most important things a tutor can do for a student. As school can be stressful, being supportive and persistent toward the student is beneficial and can make them more receptive to wanting to learn. Having patience is also very important for tutors as some students may not understand a concept and the…

For me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand how they feel about the subject or a topic. We must have to guide them and emphasize the importance of the topic by giving them a real life examples and illustrations. I think in that way they will find the subject more interesting. What I can consider as my strength as…

I think the most important thing is helping build their confidence, not just their knowledge. A tutor should make sure the student actually understands the content, not just memorises it, and create a space where they feel comfortable asking questions. It’s also important to adapt to how each student learns, because not everyone understands…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure they feel supported and allow them to take the lead. Having a strong internal drive to learn and micro-teaching skills I think is the key role in tutoring. In my opinion, tutoring is not only teaching but also a part of learning experience that enables us to recall and applying the knowledge we have because it is a proof that we have understood what we have already learned. Micro-skill is the second…

As a tutor, what I believe to be important for a student is the ability to not only push but to better the student in their schooling career. My years of high school were spent with teachers who picked favourites and let me fade into the background. Inside NorthgateTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Vivaan focused on letter formation and early numeracy skills, including writing letters and numbers with attention to correct shape.

In Year 9, Olivia tackled the surface area and volume of composite shapes as well as applying index laws to simplify algebraic expressions, using diagrams for clarity where helpful.

For Year 11 Math Methods, Liam worked through completing the square for quadratics and practiced graphing parabolas by finding their turning points.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student found it hard to settle and stay focused during basic multiplication tasks—one tutor noted, "we didn't really do anything; wouldn't settle down." This meant less time on practice and slower progress with core skills.

In Year 11 Maths, another student relied heavily on the calculator for mean and standard deviation questions, often missing key formula details when entering data.

For a Year 8 algebra session, skipping steps in rearranging equations led to confusion over negative signs and order of operations.

When written work was messy or disorganized, as seen in double-line notebook exercises, mistakes were harder to catch and fix.

Recent Achievements

A Northgate tutor noticed Samantha, a Year 11 student, went from hesitating with trigonometry to asking insightful questions and working through problems on her own.

Another high schooler who previously struggled with completing the square is now solving all related questions accurately and finishing tasks on time without help.

In a recent primary session, Vivaan began openly accepting guidance to improve his handwriting—a shift from earlier reluctance—and now participates confidently in social interactions.

Last week, one student completed every simultaneous equation problem independently after needing step-by-step support just two sessions ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nundah Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Virginia State School.
