I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to take the time to understand who the student is. not every student learns the same way and the only way to effectively help someone is to take the time to know them first. As a tutor, i always take the time to get to know my student first so i can develop a connection with them and…

The msot influential tutors that I have had have all been there for me beyond just amademically, but also as older people I can look to for advice on various things, and that is what I think a tutor needs to have as this also aids the teaching process because students are more likely to be involved if they enjoy the classes and have that…

The most important things I can do for a student is to engage them in their learning and spark their love/passion for a subject. I want my student to be able to like what they are doing and look forward to the tutoring sessions we have planned. I believe my strength as a tutor is my communication skill. Since I had only recently graduated from…

Help them find the answers for themselves and teach them the techniques that they can use to do this. A tutor should never give the answers upfront. I am patient and empathetic with students of different backgrounds and learning styles. I try to fit the tutoring around their personality and preferred style of…

A tutor must always fully and wholly understand his content and always develop innovative ways to communicate the information to their students; meaning - don't copy the textbook on a power point, instead develop your own materials My recent conclusion of year 12 gives me fresh knowledge on the current study designs, the appropriate material…

It is important to be available as often as required, and to be friendly and approachable. A student should feel safe around their tutor, and be able to ask them any question. I am good at adapting my teaching style to suit the needs of every individual student. I understand that all students learn in different ways, so I cater my teaching to suit…

Firstly, being kind, patient and listening to the student matters the most. This is because not everyone is the same, not everyone has the same capacity to understand and grasp the concept. One student may understand it in a minute, whereas another may take 10. So its very important that the tutor is kind, patient and listens to the student.…

The most important thing as a tutor is to appreciate students for who they are and to also work around their own respective strengths and capabilities Tutoring is conducted on a one-to-one basis, meaning that you get to know your pupils very well. I believe it is the willingness to go through a topic they have trouble, and even when they struggle to grasp the concept, to be a helping hand for them. A tutor helps students feel capable of achieving their goals, helps foster good study habits and willingness to study. My main strengths as a tutor are patience, communication, and adaptabiloty.…

whilst grades and results are critical, I believe my role to students would be to build their confidence in their own capabilities. Being open to answering any questions that is why it is important for the tutor to know their level and teach the stuff they are confident with. - Simplify the subject/topic at hand, making a very challenging topic seem approachable and solvable. - Build rapport, and perhaps gain a form of friendship, so that the learning experience seems less like teaching at school/university, and more friendly and relaxed, which is conducive to enjoyable learning. A tutor should be patient and be flexible, able to adjust their lesson plan according to student needs. It is important that the tutor does not just talk AT the student, but allow them to respond and engage with the student, in a way that allows the student to integrate lessons on paper into daily life, and hopefully foster an interest in the…

The old proverb comes to mind of: "Give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you'll feed him for a lifetime." The most important thing is to believe in the student, so…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand their students and the way they learn! This means bringing up different approaches to studying if one does not work for the student and ensuring that they are listened to and supported at all time! Tutors should not shame their students and work on more than just achieving…

Inside OfficerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Mia worked on finding the area and perimeter of square and triangle shapes as well as practicing persuasive writing.

In Year 8, Ethan focused on algebraic fractions and revising index laws to strengthen his understanding of algebra topics.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia completed a chemistry assessment involving chemical reactions and practiced mathematics probability questions using real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

During a recent Year 10 English session, the student's writing showed frequent grammar and spelling errors, yet he rarely proofread—even when mistakes were highlighted by Microsoft Word.

"He seems comfortable just passing and not striving to achieve his best," a tutor noted after reviewing an assignment.

In Year 9 Mathematics, answers were often unchecked, with simple calculation slips (like 12 Ă— 6) overlooked due to skipping review steps.

In both Years 7 and VCE-level sessions, uncharged iPads repeatedly delayed lessons by up to fifteen minutes while he searched for a working device. This left less time for targeted learning.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Officer noticed one Year 11 student now independently double-checks his maths work, catching errors on his own—previously he'd submit answers without reviewing.

Another high schooler who used to hesitate with assignments has started structuring essays solo and comes up with her own arguments, showing real initiative compared to earlier sessions where she waited for prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner who once guessed at tricky words is now sounding them out carefully and reads whole pages aloud without needing picture cues. Last week, she finished reading a chapter unaided for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cardinia Mobile Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Officer Primary School.
