Always reminding them to ask questions and making yourself very presentable to the student so they are free to ask questions and improve rapidly. I am able to connect with the kids on a personal level. This allows them to be comfortable with me and allows me to better teach the content whilst being able gauge their understanding more easier, as…

I personally consider the interactive and "adaptive" aspects of being a tutor to be the most important things a tutor can do for their student. In my opinion, keeping the student engaged, such as through mini breaks or games between long sessions of work, is the most effective way of teaching them in a fun, yet informative manner. Moreover, being…

The most important things a tutor can do is to be flexible, creative and listen carefully to the students. It is also important that the tutor can help the student improve their overall study skills and techniques, which can help them transfer those skills to other subjects. It is also useful if a tutor can help students understand that learning…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to empower a student in their capabilities. To remind them that they are extremely smart and capable. This encourages them to try their best. I am a very bubbly and kind individual that gets to know each of my students individually. In other words, I find their specific learning methods and resources that…

Help them to believe they can do it. Whether its solving a really hard math problem or understanding a scientific concept. Help the student to not necessarily hate the subject but see it as a pathway to help them if not further in life then to help them get through this tough period. It is important to help students to organize studies by preparing a timetable. Tutors should create awareness in students that why they are learning particular subject and importance of that subject so that they can concentrate better. I feel I can make students feel very comfortable with the subjects and encourage them to go beyond. I use the…

A tutor should be able to understand how they can help a student and should teach content or provide help in a way that suits their student's learning style. This would ensure that students are able to learn easier and with less stress. Students should not just be taught what to learn but also how to learn depending on the topic learnt, since it…

I believe a tutor should create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions without being afraid of making mistakes. A tutor should explain concepts clearly, identify gaps in understanding, and encourage independent thinking rather than memorisation. Most importantly, a tutor should help students build…

I believe that letting a student know that I care for her/him is essential to earn her/his trust and full attention. As a tutor, I will also make sure to plan my approach in a way that will best fit a specific student because every child is different and they have different needs. I, myself, love studying and I will try my best to pass that…

This is because, with empathy and encouragement, students will perform better as they are more engaged and motivated in subjects they are studying. Furthermore, a tutor should give strategies…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them learn content rather than simply absorb it. Often students will try to memorise content and methods of problem solving rather than actually understanding why and how to use those methods. If a tutor can help a student adequately understand their studies, I believe the student…

Inside OfficerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Mia worked on finding the area and perimeter of square and triangle shapes as well as practicing persuasive writing.

In Year 8, Ethan focused on algebraic fractions and revising index laws to strengthen his understanding of algebra topics.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia completed a chemistry assessment involving chemical reactions and practiced mathematics probability questions using real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

During a recent Year 10 English session, the student's writing showed frequent grammar and spelling errors, yet he rarely proofread—even when mistakes were highlighted by Microsoft Word.

"He seems comfortable just passing and not striving to achieve his best," a tutor noted after reviewing an assignment.

In Year 9 Mathematics, answers were often unchecked, with simple calculation slips (like 12 Ă— 6) overlooked due to skipping review steps.

In both Years 7 and VCE-level sessions, uncharged iPads repeatedly delayed lessons by up to fifteen minutes while he searched for a working device. This left less time for targeted learning.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Officer noticed one Year 11 student now independently double-checks his maths work, catching errors on his own—previously he'd submit answers without reviewing.

Another high schooler who used to hesitate with assignments has started structuring essays solo and comes up with her own arguments, showing real initiative compared to earlier sessions where she waited for prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner who once guessed at tricky words is now sounding them out carefully and reads whole pages aloud without needing picture cues. Last week, she finished reading a chapter unaided for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cardinia Mobile Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Officer Primary School.
