To ensure the student feels that they can ask any question (relatable preferably) and not feel that is a "silly question". I also think it is important to ensure the tutor has a plan/ is organised so that the student too knows that is the plan/ aims and goals that are being set. I am compassionate when teaching, I like to make the student feel…

I believe it is most important to build a student's confidence. Once they believe they can achieve things on their own, and develop an interest in the subject, higher grades will follow. My strength is patience and I believe my weakness would be understanding school curriculums, however I am a fast learner and know I can adapt…

I believe that helping the student truely understand the unit or content they are struggling with is important. However, I also believe that self achievement is important. Not all students are going to get A's, but if I can help them achieve their personal goals, then I consider it a job well done. Making the student feel accomplished and clever,…

I believe understanding the calibre of the student and providing constant motivation is something a tutor must importantly do for a student because quite often the individuality of a student gets lost in class and so the tutor needs to grab onto that individuality of the student so that they can not just progress ahead academically but also stand…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them strategies to gain independence academically. I view tutoring as training wheels, which should come off when a student is able to consistently score well even without the tutor's help. I believe I am able to connect with students on a one to one level, breaking down…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is guide them towards building self-esteem, confidence in themselves and ensure that when the tuition is over the student is able to recall the hours with the tutor and so be able to work through new challenging material by themselves. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students understand concepts rather than simply giving them the answers. A good tutor encourages critical thinking, builds problem-solving skills, and helps students develop the confidence to work through challenges on their own. Creating a supportive and positive learning environment also…

I believe one of the most important thing would be to build a student's confidence, teaching them to feel positive about themselves. Perhaps the student feels incapable of solving problems, despite possessing the ability. Thus, it is a tutor's duty to show students that they are capable and believe in themselves. It is also important that the…

Good grades would be the obvious answer. However, if I can spark an interest in the subject for the student the grades will logically follow. A strength would definitely be communication, I find that I can easily get my point across eloquently. I also take pride in my etiquette and friendliness. A weakness that I can see being an issue is lesson…

I believe that a tutor should be encouraging, and help each student excel in their own unique way, as not every student has the same way of learning. It is a necessity for a tutor to establish rapport with their students. As a proponent of a theory in rapport for learners, it is important that the student and teacher must sense each other, sync in their teaching and learning process and experience an affirming positive experience while educating. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is provide them with a relaxed and stress free learning environment. Our daughter Meg has been struggling with multiplication and generally not interested in math at all. Since Angela has been tutoring Meg (for a few weeks now) we have seen a huge improvement in her math. Angela has a very gentle, friendly and patient approach in the way she teaches and puts a lot of thought and effort into her work i.e. she brings along many props. a white board, worksheets and visuals to make it easier for Meg to learn different strategies. Meg thinks she's great and really enjoys her lessons. Meg is also doing much better at school to. Angela is amazing at what she does and we couldn't be happier! We definitely recommend her to anyone who is looking for a tutor.

Inside PalmyraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 Abbi focused on factorising and simplifying algebraic expressions, then moved on to solving quadratic equations using methods like completing the square and the quadratic formula.

Year 9 Isabel worked through trigonometry problems and revised for exams by tackling practice questions involving parabolas, simultaneous equations, and rationalising surds.

Meanwhile, Year 4 Jimmy practiced rounding numbers using number lines for visualization, completed long division challenges, and reinforced essay writing skills by drafting structured body paragraphs together.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Methods, Isabel often skipped working steps and rushed through long equations, leading to small errors: "She tends to solve things the 'hard' way without stopping and thinking about the best method." This cost marks in algebra and turning point problems.

For Year 10 Maths, Abbi struggled with worded quadratic questions—she found it difficult to extract key information and convert it into equations, especially after longer breaks from practice.

In Year 5 English, Jimmy's highlighting was unfocused; when asked to find important words in a passage, he highlighted almost everything, making reading slow and overwhelming.

Recent Achievements

One Palmyra tutor noticed Isabel's steady shift towards independence in Year 10 maths: after struggling with worded problems, she recently scored 81% on her exam—up from 60%—and now tackles most application questions solo.

In a recent session, Abbi (Year 11) moved from needing help to solving standard quadratic equations entirely on her own, even showing initiative by attempting harder simultaneous equation tasks without prompting.

Meanwhile, Jimmy (Year 4) made a leap in essay writing; he previously needed step-by-step guidance but managed to complete a full body paragraph himself for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Richmond Primary School.
