I think the most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and provide a steady, and provide safe reliable environment where a student feels comfortable making mistakes, I'm focused on being a mentor who always shows up prepared. Instead of spoon-feeding the answers, I like to break a problem down into logical blocks and ask the right…

A tutor's role is to help students understand key concepts and apply them confidently, leading to growth in both understanding and academic performance. Ultimately, though, I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is help students develop confidence in their own abilities and nurture a genuine curiosity and love of learning that…

I believe it is motivating and teaching the student how to get the most out of their time studying in and outside of their tutoring session. Not only will this mean they learn more but Increasing ones ability to learn means the student will enjoy studying more (as if feels like they're making progress). I think there are 3 factors which would…

A friendly and strong teaching approach would help the student to improve and gain the subject knowledge. The student can not only gain knowledge but also a confidence about what he is learning. Proper planning and scheduling the tutoring subject contents prior so that student can know at what stage he is in the learning process. Starting right…

Bring them a new way to approach problems, and help them overcome the fear of giving wrong answers or asking what they might consider "dumb questions," because there are no such things as dumb questions. My strengths as a tutor are that I make sure that my students understand the subject, and then we do practical exercises. Once they grasp the…

I think teaching students how to be independent is something tutors must do. Prioritizing things like active learning wherein students get to question things themselves, rather than being spoon-fed answers is important. Making them learn that they can find the answers themselves if they put in the effort is important. And obviously creating all…

Instill a passion to learn the subject the tutor is helping out with and just generally help make the student feel competent when dealing with the subject. The most important thing a tutor can do is never give up on a student. A tutor needs to be patient with his pupils since every student cannot grasp a particular concept at the same rate , therefore patience and understanding the student is more important. A tutor should also give time for students to practice as math is all about logic and…

One of the most damaging things one can do as a tutor is establish a blind hierarchy with their student. A tutor does not impart facts and knowledge, he or she attempts to come, along with the student, to a mutual understanding of a concept and I find that much more constructive if you approach this from a peer perspective rather than an…

The two most important things would be to clear the basics of the subject and to keep the student interested in it. Most of the students develop phobia of maths or stop being interested in the subject because they do not understand the basics. This in turn, leads them to not focus on the subject even if they are capable of doing good in it or they…

A tutor's responsibility includes building a student's confidence by helping them believe in their abilities, and to ensure they develop a deep understanding of concepts, not just memorization. Tailoring the teaching approach to the student's learning style is important for making the material more accessible. Also, creating a safe and supportive…

Try make tutoring fun, students no matter how hard you try will not retain information and be willing to learn if they are really against it. So by presenting the content in a fun but still effective manner, it is bound to show results. The most important thing when it comes to content is to not spoon feed them with the right answers, you need…

A tutor can be a role model for the student. Generally students observe character and skills of a tutor and in most cases they try to imitate them. As a tutor we have to be a responsible individual gradually transferring our personality to aspiring students. After all today's students are tommorrow's mentors. I think my determination and my…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be proud of all the improvements the student has done. It's not about congratulating them for being a high achieving student. For me it is important for tutor to be able to encourage and make the student enjoy learning. Because in order for students to learn faster, they would need to be willing to digest the new knowledge and information given by the tutor. Furthermore, it is important for tutor to look at a problem from many different perspective, because one point of…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is believe in each student, and provide a constant support and show up each week. I believe providing a comfortable place for the student greatly increases the actual learning that is able to take place. It…

Local Reviews

Ben is very diligent and commited. He tutored both my daughter's who showed marked improvement. He prepared for sessions and always kept us informed of the girls progress. He is a thoughtful and considerate guy and the girls responded well to his demeanour. I would highly recommend Ben to anyone that wants a tutor to elevate their child's academic performance.

Inside ParkvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Seamus focused on trigonometry, specifically applying sine and cosine rules to solve triangle problems, and also reviewed algebraic simplification using index laws.

For Year 11, Mia completed revision of matrices—including operations like multiplication and finding inverses—and worked through weighted graphs with Dijkstra's algorithm from the networks chapter, practising questions for her upcoming SACs.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Priya tackled exam-style questions on data analysis, including linear regression and standard deviation, while also strengthening her understanding of financial mathematics by practising compound interest problems.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, several process-related habits have stood out across both junior and senior levels.

In Year 11 maths, a student did not complete assigned homework or school holiday tasks; as the tutor observed, "she forgot most of the contents from chapter 7," making new work harder to grasp.

For a Year 12 student preparing for VCE, inconsistent note-taking and a lack of organisation in her bound reference book meant she struggled to quickly locate formulas during timed practice exams.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's written work in algebra was messy—her steps were unclear, leading to confusion when checking answers.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Parkville noticed a Year 11 student who used to rush through maths sums is now taking time to spot and correct mistakes, leading to more accurate answers.

In English, a Year 10 student has begun incorporating specific evidence into essays after previously struggling to support arguments, and can now clearly structure paragraphs using the PEEL method.

From a younger group, one Year 5 student has started regularly asking questions when unsure instead of staying silent—something she rarely did before—and finished her multiplication practice independently by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kathleen Syme Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like University High School.
