I think the lack of judgment. Encouraging students to ask questions and to clarify their doubts always makes a good learning environment. I am patient but firm and I can usually tell when someone is unsure. Meaning I can help them at a separate time or stop the class and clarify immediately. Not only that but I think I work very well with…

If I were a student, I would want my tutor to break down complex topics into simple, understandable ideas, then guide me through practice questions starting from the basics and gradually moving to more challenging ones. I believe a tutor should let the student attempt questions independently, explain the steps clearly when needed, and help them…

I believe one of the most important qualities of tutoring is offering flexibility and personlisation of lessons to students that can only be offered in a 1-on-1 environment that students can't experience in classrooms. Strong communication skills allow a tutor to recognise and adapt to each student’s strengths and weaknesses, making learning…

helping students to identify weaknesses that they wouldn't be able to discover on their own. Also, a tutor should be able to introduce the student to new approaches to the same problem. As well as a strong knowledge of the subject area, I believe compassion, patience and empathy are also vital for a successful tutor, especially for a student who may be struggling. Tutors must be competant, but I think the most important thing is to be supportive and understanding. I'm reliable, outgoing, and I possess the strange affliction of…

To build self-confidence in a student and to develop a sense of curiosity. When a student understands that they have the ability to learn, that all they need is a slight push, then they are more likely to be independent when it comes to their learning. And therefore, more curious about what they are engaging with at school. I explain concepts…

A tutor is a way for the student to gain another angle from which to view the content, so as to better help with understanding. A tutor tailors their 'teaching' to a way which most assists the student with understanding and knowledge. The student's personal skill level can be evaluated and catered to by a tutor. I love the challenge which comes…

Being able to patiently under the child is one of the core trait. Every student is different and their pace of learning is not constant. Inside ParkvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Max built confidence with column addition and subtraction, then moved on to identifying odd and even numbers and describing fractions like halves and quarters using visual aids.

Year 5 student Emily practiced long multiplication, including multiplying two-digit numbers, and learned to convert between improper and mixed fractions by representing them on number lines.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Josh focused on perimeter calculations for composite rectilinear shapes and consolidated understanding of area through grid-based problems before tackling worded questions involving mass and different units.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student struggled to recall subtraction methods and the reasons behind odd/even numbers when put on the spot, as a tutor observed: "she was unable to recall the exact methods of adding and subtracting, and the reason behind concepts of odd and even." This gap showed up especially during in-lesson questions without homework reinforcement.

In Year 7 mathematics, long division remained a stumbling block; confusion persisted after repeated attempts, particularly when switching between strategies or times tables were skipped. Without consistent written practice at home, these foundational processes often faded between lessons—leaving students unsure mid-task or reverting to less effective approaches under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A Parkville tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who, after weeks of hesitation, finally started writing down her own instructions for homework—she used to rely on verbal prompts but now wants reminders she can check herself.

In Year 11 maths, one student who always struggled with worded multiplication and division problems is now independently tackling them using arrays and can explain his reasoning out loud without guessing.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4, who previously avoided symmetry exercises, surprised the tutor by completing both sides of a symmetry drawing accurately during the session and even asked for an extra challenge.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kathleen Syme Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like University High School.
