I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help them better understand the material they are learning and to really engage with it. Tutors have the ability to be one on one with students and they can really transform a students perspective and views on a particular subject for the better. My strengths as a tutor…

The most important thing would be to be able to encourage and motivate the student. The tutor should be able to help the students with any difficulty or problem that they may have. As such, the tutor should also ensure that there is effective commuication between him and his/her student so that the latter can ask any questions without hesitation.…

An example could be making an imaginary layout to help students visualize the background of the problem. Creating an imaginary scenario to help students better visualize the concept of the problem. The most important things a tutor can do are create a supportive learning environment, build the student’s confidence, and develop their problem-solving skills rather than just giving answers. A tutor should guide students to think critically, reinforce foundational concepts, and equip them with strategies they can use independently in the…

I feel like one of the most common problems I see with fellow University Students is a mental block carried over from their high school days - the preconception that they "simply can't do" particular things or that they're not good enough at a subject to attempt things. As such, I feel like getting rid of these blocks by showing students that even…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is making them feel confident that they can and will understand the information they are struggling with and doing so in a patient and kind way. The goal of a tutor shouldn't just be to check off a box but to leave a student feeling that they are capable and someone cares about their hard…

Over the course of a tutor's time with a student, the most important skill they can provide is the ability to think both critically and universally, fueled by a hunger for knowledge. That is to say, both a stronger and more capable work ethic. Analysing how a student mentally approaches problems, communicating to them precisely what their…

At the crux of it all, the ultimate goal of tutoring is for the tutor to enable the student to have an easier time grappling with material that they would otherwise struggle with. It is important to teach frameworks and critical thinking rather than boring formulas or random facts. In other words, the goal of any tutor is to teach someone how to fish and never give them fish. I strive to find familiar examples in real life that connect with the concepts we are learning to ease this process. I am able to meet my students…

Listen to what they're actually struggling with instead of assuming. Create a space where they're not afraid to make mistakes or ask questions. And focus on building their understanding and confidence, not just getting through the material as fast as possible. Using real-world examples and analogies can really help students remember things more…

Inside Peppermint GroveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ella focused on converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, then practiced applying these conversions in simple word problems.

Year 8 student Daniel worked through solving linear equations with pronumerals—including those with fractions—and expanded brackets while reviewing how to combine like terms.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sophie revised circle theorems by working on proofs and terminology before practicing setting out formal solutions for tangent-related questions.

Recent Challenges

Several process-related habits impacted learning this term across multiple year levels.

In Year 9, a student regularly tried to solve equations in her head instead of showing all working, which led to "a lot of careless mistakes along the way" and made it harder for her to spot errors under test conditions.

For a Year 11 student, homework was sometimes incomplete or forgotten entirely—one lesson note simply read, "Did not complete homework," meaning new concepts like polynomial division had to be retaught from scratch rather than extended.

Messy working and unclear graph sketches in senior years also caused confusion during revision and assessment.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Peppermint Grove recently saw a Year 9 student start attempting all their algebra questions independently before asking for help, a big shift from earlier sessions where they'd wait for guidance.

In Year 11, one student who used to rush through homework began checking her answers and caught several careless mistakes on her own.

Another win came from a Year 7 session: after struggling with short division at first, the student now completes these problems confidently and sets out their working much more clearly than before, even finishing an entire worksheet without needing reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Claremont Community Hub & Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Presbyterian Ladies' College.
