The most important thing that I can do as a tutor would be to make sure the kid understands everything that I teach. Each kid is different. Finding the right teaching style for that kid and teaching as such will make the kid more involved into the subject and makes learning fun. I am a very good observer and an active listener. I make sure I tend…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to engage them in the content and make them feel comfortable and willing to listen and study properly. My strengths are explanation skills, patience, and an earnest attitude to my tutoring work. Besides, I have a strong grasp of Advanced Mathematics and Biology, so I think I…

Be adaptable and change teaching methods based on what the student needs the most, whether that's different exercise styles or explaining a concept in a different way. I believe that knowing how to apply the content is just as important as knowing the content in order to maximise marks. I think a strength of mine is reading questions and quickly…

Make them enjoy a subject. as a teacher you can only do so much when it comes to teaching. you can give them all the work, call them, and pester them, but if they don't like it they will never excel in it. Personal connection would be my important factor in tutoring, having a good basic relationship and being able to build upon that will make communicating to the student much easier. I believe that there is often a barrier between teachers and students in a school system and sometimes that barrier may affect an individual student, it transforms into…

It is most important that a tutor doesn't give up on their students. This means not only continuing teaching the student but also means that the tutor should always believe a student can improve with their guidance. In addition, it is essential for a tutor to be able to learn the student's strengths and weaknesses and their way of thinking, so the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to tailor their teaching approach to meet the individual needs of each student. For example, I work with a student who has mild ADHD and struggled with maintaining focus. To address this, I incorporated short physical activities, such as star jumps, into our sessions every 15…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, encourage curiosity, and build the student’s confidence in their own abilities. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to instil confidence. They can do this by promoting critical thinking and providing constructive feedback. Given my experience with tutoring, I believe my…

Create a comfortable, relaxed environment to learn and ask questions. Improve confidence: many students don't know what they're capable of, and just need the self-belief to show it off. Be able to react to a student's needs as they develop and progress in order to continue learning as efficiently as possible. I believe I am relatable and good…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is be supportive. Students are already frustrated when they do not understand something, hence we do not need to add to that by being frustrated at them. In addition, a tutor needs to be flexible. This allows one to better tailor the program to the student's needs and the student's strengths. I…

Inside PetershamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack worked on algebra word problems and probability, applying these skills to real-life scenarios.

In Year 4, Harry focused on solving multiplication questions and was introduced to number sequences for pattern recognition.

Meanwhile, Kyah (Year 6) revised perimeter concepts and practised converting between millimetres, centimetres, and kilometres while reading maps for her homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, a student's written work was often unclear, making it hard to trace errors and slowing progress in algebra. As one tutor noted, "the way she sets out her work will greatly improve her understanding and reduce errors."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student working on essays tended to overcomplicate arguments instead of building ideas step by step; this led to confusion mid-way through responses.

For a primary student in Year 4, loss of focus at the start of lessons meant new concepts like time or division took longer to grasp, even after warm-up activities.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Petersham noticed Emily now tells her tutor when she's stuck instead of staying quiet—last session, she worked through tricky area problems independently after asking for help.

Jason (Year 10) has started tackling unfamiliar maths questions on his own; although confused at first, he finished the lesson answering new concepts without support.

In Year 4, Zoe previously hesitated to participate but recently completed multiplication questions independently and stayed focused much longer than before. At the end of that lesson, she answered every problem on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanmore Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Petersham Public School.
