Teach obviously! but i think if the tutor can make the lessons as fun as possible so that the student looks forward to them as something enjoyable rather than as purely work, the best results will occur. I am an excellent communicator and can teach via example quite effectively in almost any subject. I am easily able to match my communication…

One of the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, is not only make the subject fun and easier to understand but to make the student believe in himself/herself. Most of the students, do not feel very confident in their own understanding of the subject and hesitate to participate in class discussions. I believe by making the student…

I believe the most important aspect of being a tutor is to be able to tailor the teaching to the needs of the students. Some students might be ahead of the initial plan and some may fall behind, it is crucial for us to help them get on the right track and make sure that everyone understands the concepts for their level or further. Using a tailored learning program for all abilities and expectations, and an unfailing growth mindset, a tutor should provide students with a love of learning that leads to internal fulfillment and a virtuous cycle where concepts are pursued willingly, and thus, more thoroughly. However, a tutor is not only a teacher, but a mentor; they should…

A tutor should give the most custom type of teaching to each student as general lectures are also given in school and their is no point in repeating the same. Having spent a lot of my high school career with a variety of tutors, I have created the ideal profile of an effective tutor in my mind, and the most important thing I value in a tutor is their ability to go beyond showing how to do something and reveal the path a student must take to discover a solution for themselves. I believe the most important thing is to make sure the student fully understands the knowledge, being able to use it in any situation, while enjoying the learning. Inside PetershamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack worked on algebra word problems and probability, applying these skills to real-life scenarios.

In Year 4, Harry focused on solving multiplication questions and was introduced to number sequences for pattern recognition.

Meanwhile, Kyah (Year 6) revised perimeter concepts and practised converting between millimetres, centimetres, and kilometres while reading maps for her homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, a student's written work was often unclear, making it hard to trace errors and slowing progress in algebra. As one tutor noted, "the way she sets out her work will greatly improve her understanding and reduce errors."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student working on essays tended to overcomplicate arguments instead of building ideas step by step; this led to confusion mid-way through responses.

For a primary student in Year 4, loss of focus at the start of lessons meant new concepts like time or division took longer to grasp, even after warm-up activities.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Petersham noticed Emily now tells her tutor when she's stuck instead of staying quiet—last session, she worked through tricky area problems independently after asking for help.

Jason (Year 10) has started tackling unfamiliar maths questions on his own; although confused at first, he finished the lesson answering new concepts without support.

In Year 4, Zoe previously hesitated to participate but recently completed multiplication questions independently and stayed focused much longer than before. At the end of that lesson, she answered every problem on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanmore Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Petersham Public School.
