Personally, the most important thing is that you get the students to actually understand the lessons and know what they are doing rather than just completing their works. I can stay back for extra time just to make they understand the lessons. ACHIEVEMENTS: HSC Mathematics: Band 6 in Mathematic Advanced High Band 5 in Mathematic Extension…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to truly understand the student and make them feel supported and comfortable. It's crucial to identify where the student is struggling and where they need support, as well as recognizing their potential. Tailoring the teaching approach to suit the individual needs of each student is key, as I…

Help them understand the concept in class. Teaching them how to do question is not enough, instead teaching them how it work and how to deal with it basic. The tutor plays an important role in teaching the student that they care about their academics and them as a person. Some kids feel hopeless in some subjects at school, due to bad grades or teachers that have other students to focus on, and believe that there is no way to improve because of that. Through the one-on-one experience with tutors, the…

The most important thing is to make sure that the student doesn't feel overwhelmed with their workload, and instead has fun (or at least doesn't detest the time spent) while studying. In this regard, the tutor has to make the content interesting and tailor it to each individual if it's one-on-one. I'm very patient in explaining concepts. I also…

I feel the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. Being able to understand their source of motivation as well as the areas in which they need the most help is extremely vital as a tutor. I think my strength as a tutor comes from my passion as a teacher. Whilst not having any formal experience tutoring, I know I enjoy…

Education is very important in today's societies, many parents hire tutors to help their children catch up or keep up in school subjects where they are having difficulties and have fallen behind their peers. I think a tutor has to be such kind of person who can unwillingly be able to establish himself/ herself as a role model to follow which will guarantee the success of the the student in the future. My personal opinion on me is I can understand the problem being faced by the students despite their denial about the problem and eventually bring them…

A tutor's job is to build confidence and make learning feel rewarding. That starts with clear explanations, patient encouragement, and adapting to the student's pace. It also means modelling effective study habits and problem-solving strategies, so they can work independently. When students enjoy the process and trust their skills, their results…

Inside PetershamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack worked on algebra word problems and probability, applying these skills to real-life scenarios.

In Year 4, Harry focused on solving multiplication questions and was introduced to number sequences for pattern recognition.

Meanwhile, Kyah (Year 6) revised perimeter concepts and practised converting between millimetres, centimetres, and kilometres while reading maps for her homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, a student's written work was often unclear, making it hard to trace errors and slowing progress in algebra. As one tutor noted, "the way she sets out her work will greatly improve her understanding and reduce errors."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student working on essays tended to overcomplicate arguments instead of building ideas step by step; this led to confusion mid-way through responses.

For a primary student in Year 4, loss of focus at the start of lessons meant new concepts like time or division took longer to grasp, even after warm-up activities.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Petersham noticed Emily now tells her tutor when she's stuck instead of staying quiet—last session, she worked through tricky area problems independently after asking for help.

Jason (Year 10) has started tackling unfamiliar maths questions on his own; although confused at first, he finished the lesson answering new concepts without support.

In Year 4, Zoe previously hesitated to participate but recently completed multiplication questions independently and stayed focused much longer than before. At the end of that lesson, she answered every problem on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanmore Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Petersham Public School.
