When encountering students who are relatively slow-learners, I take step-to-step approach and make sure the students actually get…

Offering them ways to easily comprehend subjects and topics, making subjects more enjoyable. I will try my very hardest to ensure my students feel that they are able to openly express their thoughts and to answer questions without the fear of judgement. I want my students to learn from their mistakes, and not be afraid to pick themselves back up…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build a foundation of confidence and independent thinking. Rather than simply providing the correct answers, a tutor should guide a student through the logic of a problem so they can eventually solve it on their own. It is also vital to build a strong rapport where the student feels…

Give the student the foundational skills to excel on the own once outside of tutoring. A good tutor will be able to get their student to a level where they feel competent to work by themselves, and know both how to solve a problem, and why we approach the problem the way we do. My strengths as a tutor is my relatability, as math didn’t come easy…

I think a tutor should have at least some level of personal connection with the student. A tutor should always motivate students to try their hardest, and also engage them into the subject as much possible. The ability to understand, to some extent at least whether the student has understood that paricular concept or…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel capable. It’s not just about explaining the material, it’s about creating an environment where they feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. A great tutor doesn’t just help improve grades; they help build confidence, independence, and a mindset that says,…

A tutor should focus on building both understanding and confidence. That includes breaking down difficult concepts, being patient, and adapting to the student’s learning style. I also think it’s important to encourage problem-solving skills so the student becomes more independent over time, rather than relying on the tutor. I think one of my…

I believe it's important for tutors to ensure that their students see them as a not only in a 'teacher' role, but someone they could look to advice if they ever feel the need - like a role model, or a mentor. Tutors should help their students gain confidence in their ability to achieve their goals, and by establishing small, achievable milestones…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to empower them to become independent learners. This involves building confidence by providing encouragement and celebrating successes, fostering a belief in the student's potential. I think that would be putting themselves as a student and be the teacher they always wanted/needed when they were their age. There is nothing more powerful than a teacher who is still a student at heart, in my opinion. Empathy as a student, as well as finding simple ways to explain complex…

Personalisation. In a classroom, the teacher's attention is divided and the material needs to be taught in ways that the majority understands. However, each student understands and learns differently so having it taylored to the individual (figuring out what they know, what they don't know and what they misunderstood) builds the foundation of…

I think understanding that every kid is different and special in their own way, and they have their own needs and methods of approaching problems is very important. I believe empowerment is one single most important aspects a tutor can bring to a student's live. I have oftentimes seen students who are lost and have almost given up on their desire to learn a new topic. In these situations, it is crucial to approach such students with a massive smile on your face and listen to their issues and expectations in…

Inside PetershamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack worked on algebra word problems and probability, applying these skills to real-life scenarios.

In Year 4, Harry focused on solving multiplication questions and was introduced to number sequences for pattern recognition.

Meanwhile, Kyah (Year 6) revised perimeter concepts and practised converting between millimetres, centimetres, and kilometres while reading maps for her homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, a student's written work was often unclear, making it hard to trace errors and slowing progress in algebra. As one tutor noted, "the way she sets out her work will greatly improve her understanding and reduce errors."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student working on essays tended to overcomplicate arguments instead of building ideas step by step; this led to confusion mid-way through responses.

For a primary student in Year 4, loss of focus at the start of lessons meant new concepts like time or division took longer to grasp, even after warm-up activities.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Petersham noticed Emily now tells her tutor when she's stuck instead of staying quiet—last session, she worked through tricky area problems independently after asking for help.

Jason (Year 10) has started tackling unfamiliar maths questions on his own; although confused at first, he finished the lesson answering new concepts without support.

In Year 4, Zoe previously hesitated to participate but recently completed multiplication questions independently and stayed focused much longer than before. At the end of that lesson, she answered every problem on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanmore Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Petersham Public School.
