Encourage students and provide resources, because the more practice is done, the more confident the student can be in what they know. I am patient, and I tend to explain things clearly. I am able to see how different students learn in different ways, so I can adjust my teaching for them to learn most…

Make them enjoy the lessons, as interest is the best teacher. It is difficult to grasp ideas if one hates it, however if something is interesting, it no longer feels a chore and learning speeds will increase. Clear and concise Able to make it fun rather than…

Most tutors forget that students never enjoy tutoring, so it is important to set interesting challenges to keep students motivated and also polishing their skills using unorthodox methods. Too much of the time tutors just read off the textbook and don't provide alternative methods or keep the students' focus on their work. I believe the students…

I believe that encouraging the creation of ideas and allowing students to assemble their own ideas and thoughts is a good way to promote creativity. I challenge my students to be free-thinkers and am always open to suggestions from them. Uniqueness and originality are rewarded. Hence, these attributes will allow them to be confident and well…

MENTOR/TUTOR It is important that tutors have a friendly approach to students and make sure that students set a goal for every lesson. This way as a tutor we know that the student knows what is being taught and ensure the student understands the concepts. My strengths as a tutor are knowing the students' weaknesses of each area, and knowing…

A tutor or at least a teacher is someone who can give students a helping hand, perhaps a friend is too informal but someone they can relate to. I think being able to understand your student and what makes them improve or how they can improve is also essential as a tutor and a teacher. It is useless to spoon feed facts and knowledge to a student if…

I believe being able to relate and support your student is the most fundamental aspect of tutoring, as it allows you to effectively gauge where they are struggling and excelling. As not every student can be treated in the same manner, this understanding is quintessential in ensuring that one's student is enjoying tutoring and growing in knowledge…

I think a tutor can most importantly help a student with the concepts that they are struggling with in school and also helping students learn concepts that their school hasn't gone through yet so that once they do, it'll be revision for them rather than learning it for the first time. This particularly helped me when I was doing my HSC.…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to set a good example. In many cases that I've seen, students tend to look up to tutors as role models, not just in education, but life in general. Coming from my own experience, I tend to rely on my tutors for more than just explaining to me a maths solution or discussing how to draft an…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be patient and make sure the student understands what i am teaching, as i was a student once and never understood the teacher but just listened because it was easier that way, however now i want to pass on my knowledge I am a very organized individual and have patience with my students as i…

Actually engage and interact with the student to find where, and more importantly why they're struggling or need help. This not only is a short term solution to a single question which may be raised, but is extremely helpful in the long run as their problem solving skills and overall performance improves. Also, make sure the student actually…

The most important thing tutors can do is support their students which includes adapting lessons to individual learning styles and needs. Along with pinpointing any gaps in knowledge, and help the students understand those areas. Along with listening to them, about what things they struggle with and what they’re already good at. My strengths…

A tutor shoud be able to determine the relative strengths and weaknesses of the student and proceed to generate real results for the student. Inside Picnic PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sarah focused on timestables (4s and 6s) and explored nets of 3D shapes, while also practising time reading in 15-minute intervals.

Year 6 student Max worked through decimal addition and subtraction as well as solving word problems involving fractions, using diagrams to clarify concepts.

For Year 7, Olivia tackled surface area calculations for cubes and rectangular prisms and developed strategies for working backwards in multi-step word problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, calculator over-reliance was noted during BODMAS and surface area work—"needs to double-check inputs on the calculator before giving answers"—which led to avoidable slip-ups when transferring values.

A Year 6 student repeatedly skipped writing out working in decimal subtraction, instead changing numbers mentally; this made it harder to spot where borrowing had been missed.

In Year 10 algebra, forgetting to label units for volume and perimeter left final answers incomplete, despite correct calculations.

Motivation dips after mistakes also affected one Year 7's focus during times tables drills, resulting in slow session starts and less verbal engagement.

Recent Achievements

One Picnic Point tutor noticed a big change with a Year 9 student who used to freeze up on worded maths problems; now she tackles multi-step questions independently. In Year 11, another student struggled with BODMAS and often made order-of-operations mistakes, but last week he referred to his operation list without prompting and solved equations correctly.

A younger student in Year 5 who'd always guessed at analogue clock times can now read the minute hand accurately—she read several different times out loud without hesitation during their session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Panania Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Picnic Point Public School.
