For me, the most important things a tutor can do are build trust with the student, explain concepts clearly, and create a positive, supportive environment. When students feel comfortable and supported, they are more willing to ask questions and take on challenges Breaking down complex ideas into simple steps helps them understand and apply what…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is tailor their teaching to the individual. Outside of a large class of students it becomes easier to change a lesson to suit a particular student, spending more time on a point when a student is struggling with it and ensuring that a topic is perfectly understood before moving on. I think…

I view the role of a tutor as more of a assistant to the teacher. I main goal for the a tutor is to go in-depth on discussed in the classroom allowing the students to wrap their head around concepts that were once perceived as difficult and challenging. It is the tutors role to teaching correct habits and strategies to tackle difficult or…

Tutors should be a friendly guiding figure that the student feels that they can approach at any time for assistance. As a tutor, the best thing that I can give to a student is the confidence for them to feel that they can achieve greater and better things. A tutor can also inspire a student to be like them, a positive role model that helps shape…

I believe that it's crucial for a tutor to create an open and supportive relationship with their student. A student needs to feel comfortable to ask questions and communicate what they need, and it's the tutor's responsibility to create a space where that is possible. As an older sister (and informal tutor) to a 10-year-old little girl, I've…

Ultimately, I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give the student a passion for learning, as well as strong study methods. This way, in the future, the student is able to perform well academically in an independent manner. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor would be that I make tutoring sessions fun and…

Be a mentor as well, mathematical skills might not be the only thing a child needs. Often a student doesn't perform poorly in school due to disinterest or an inability to understand the work, but because of various troubles in their lives. Pre-teens and teenagers are often reluctant to share their troubles with their parents but jump at the…

Definitely support the student, always be there if they need help with questions and a crucial quality that a good tutor must have is patience in my opinion. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel like they can actually handle the work on their own. It Is easy to just give someone the answers, but that doesn't help them in the long run. Since I'm majoring in psychology, I try to focus on building their confidence and helping them get past that "mental block" where they…

Inside PrahranTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Ava focused on applying the Pythagorean Theorem to word problems and practiced unit conversions for measurement, including using conversion prefixes.

In Year 9, Nicholas worked through negative integers and reviewed fraction concepts, while also tackling algebraic skills like solving single-variable equations and simplifying expressions.

For Year 11, Ben prepared for an upcoming probability test by analyzing tree diagrams and completed exam revision covering parabolas and key syllabus topics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student sometimes "guessed what to do next" in algebra instead of logically working through each step, which led to avoidable errors when negative numbers appeared.

In a senior session, forgetting to bring completed homework meant valuable time was spent reconstructing past work rather than tackling new challenges.

For a Year 10 trigonometry task, "relying too heavily on formulas" without understanding when or why to use them caused confusion on non-standard problems.

As one tutor noted, "skipping steps made mistakes with + and – harder to catch."

Neatness in written solutions often lagged behind verbal reasoning, especially during revision.

Recent Achievements

A Prahran tutoring session saw a Year 10 student finally nail SOH CAH TOA, now manipulating trig equations independently after struggling to set them up on her own.

One high schooler earned full marks on a quiz—word problems included—when last term he hesitated with multi-step solutions and often skipped them altogether.

Another secondary student who used to quietly guess at answers has started speaking up about learning strategies, even offering feedback mid-session.

This week, a younger student completed her entire practice paper before the lesson and came prepared with specific questions she'd written down herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Prahran / Windsor Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Prahran High School.
