A tutor must understand that each student is going through a separate journey in life and explore how their life experiences may have shaped their perception of their strengths and weaknesses. Providing adequate feedback is the most important trait of a tutor. A tutor must identify key areas of weakness especially for maths. A tutor is simply an extension of learning tool from school, when students feel like school's teaching may not be sufficient. A tutor must be able to accurately evaluate the student's level and how strong their understandings are, and design their lessons accordingly. Flexibly tailored lesson plans for students, as it is 1 on 1, are a must for the…

Inside ProspectTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Sarah explored ancient numeral systems and place value, using practical examples to strengthen understanding.

Year 10 student Lucas worked through algebraic fractions by practicing factorising and simplifying expressions, as well as tackling addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of algebraic terms.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jasmine focused on economics concepts such as the business cycle diagram and circular flow of income, applying these to practice extended response questions for assessment preparation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Economics, responses to short-answer questions often lacked structure and detail; as one tutor noted, "the format and structure of the responses could be improved over time," which led to missed marks for partial explanations.

In Year 9 Mathematics, there was a tendency to rush through problems, causing avoidable errors and lost working—particularly when basic concepts like geometry were involved.

A Year 8 student's organizational habits also hindered revision: incomplete bookwork made it difficult to track progress or identify weak areas.

During essay writing in Year 12 English, cosmetic corrections masked underlying grammar issues rather than addressing them directly.

Recent Achievements

One Prospect tutor noticed a real shift with Christopher in Year 11 maths—he'd previously hesitated on absolute value inequalities, but now not only understands them, he's begun spotting and correcting his own mistakes without prompting.

In senior economics, Shriyaa is producing more structured essays; she's started backing up her points with statistics and can now research topics independently—a change from earlier sessions where she needed more guidance.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to rush through reading has recently taken time to spot and fix her own grammatical errors before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Constitution Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ebenezer Christian College.
