Far too often students fall into the trap of memorisation. They lack the conceptual understanding, thus when given a question that does not perfectly coincide with their rules, they panic. I strongly believe that as a physics tutor, my goal is to motivate students to really grasp concepts and truly appreciate the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of a rule…

The important thing a physics tutor can do for a student is to not be the driver of the student's journey, but instead an instructor. To set out a pathway for the student and foster individuality within them. A tutor must develop such a relationship that in the instance the student is to give a biography, they mention their tutor as a vital part…

Build their knowledge, fill in the gaps and take them to where they need to be. I am patient and focused and sometimes if a student doesn\'t understand something, I know it may relate to some foundational knowledge the student does not have. so I try to fill in the gaps before I proceed. For eg a student can\'t understand what is a 2% debenture if…

I don't believe that the most important things that a physics tutor can do for a student start in the classroom. The most important thing in achieving desired outcomes in school, or any discipline, is attitude. It starts with understanding that a whole is made up of parts, and that ten minutes a day, although small, adds up over the course of…

To be attentive and to address the students personal needs for growth. The tutor should set an ideal example in terms of behaviour motivation and actions- one which a student should be able to look up to but also resonate with. This allows him to engage with the student at a personal level and provide better more relatable academic support, but…

The ability to not judge the student's level of knowledge in a subject and be keen on helping them is very important as a physics tutor. A tutor also needs to adhere to the learning needs of the student. If a student needs more help in a topic compared to others, i think its important to cater to that and not ignore it. Not being overly…

Inside ProspectTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Sarah explored ancient numeral systems and place value, using practical examples to strengthen understanding.

Year 10 student Lucas worked through algebraic fractions by practicing factorising and simplifying expressions, as well as tackling addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of algebraic terms.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jasmine focused on economics concepts such as the business cycle diagram and circular flow of income, applying these to practice extended response questions for assessment preparation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Economics, responses to short-answer questions often lacked structure and detail; as one tutor noted, "the format and structure of the responses could be improved over time," which led to missed marks for partial explanations.

In Year 9 Mathematics, there was a tendency to rush through problems, causing avoidable errors and lost working—particularly when basic concepts like geometry were involved.

A Year 8 student's organizational habits also hindered revision: incomplete bookwork made it difficult to track progress or identify weak areas.

During essay writing in Year 12 English, cosmetic corrections masked underlying grammar issues rather than addressing them directly.

Recent Achievements

One Prospect tutor noticed a real shift with Christopher in Year 11 maths—he'd previously hesitated on absolute value inequalities, but now not only understands them, he's begun spotting and correcting his own mistakes without prompting.

In senior economics, Shriyaa is producing more structured essays; she's started backing up her points with statistics and can now research topics independently—a change from earlier sessions where she needed more guidance.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to rush through reading has recently taken time to spot and fix her own grammatical errors before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Constitution Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ebenezer Christian College.
