I think it is the ability to understand the student's capability and their needs. Therefore, as a tutor, I can provide personalised learning lessons that are suitable to the student, hence, they can still progress at their own pace without too much pressure. The most important quality required as a tutor is my good subject knowledge. In addition,…

The most important thing for a tutor is to provide a fun learning environment for the student and empower them to learn. A tutor should be able to motivate the students to organise, formulate study goals and most importantly self learn and self improve. The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. However, sometimes desperate times happen, and then we must drop the profound thoughts and do what needs…

In my opinion, being a person that students are comfortable with to reach out for help is one of the most important things. A tutor should be there to assist them, not add stress or pressure to them. I also think it is important for tutors to motivate the students to learn, instead of just giving answers, and in motivating them, tutors should be…

The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to put in time. They need to act as if it's not just a job which pays. Prepping lessons early, helping with questions outside of tutoring time, marking tests. All of these examples show a great tutor. - I put a lot of care into my work. - I love seeing others thrive through my help. - I…

According to me, the most important thing as a tutor is to try and try until the student understands, although it takes a lot of patience and time. It is also important to explore the student's best way of learning, which may include audio, visual, or kinesthetic, and make efforts to teach them accordingly. As a tutor, I first make my students…

I think being patient with someone and allowing them to grow in their own way and learn and figure things out is something very important for a tutor to understand. I will challenge students to do questions out of their comfort zone as I believe that is the best way to grow, but only after I know that they understand the basics have a strong…

A tutor should create a safe space for a student so that he/she can reach out whenever needed. Through this, a student will feel more comfortable in his/her studies and will acquire more confidence since they will have the opportunity to be more inquisitive. They will be more eager to learn and explore. My biggest strength as a tutor is patience.…

A tutor can be a guiding light for students. Each student has their own way of absorbing the information that they are taught. This might not always be available to students in a large classroom setting. A good tutor recognizes the strengths and weaknesses of the students and guides them accordingly. I spent most of my adult life abroad as a…

Inside ProspectTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Hannah focused on simplifying fractions and converting them into decimals using long division.

Year 8 student Sarah worked through algebra expansion and applied the difference of two squares to solve problems.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack practised solving quadratic equations and calculated the distance between two points on a coordinate plane.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often made small calculation errors in algebra because her working was cramped—she could consider spacing out her writing, which would help her see things clearer and avoid miscues.

In Year 11, forgetting to inform the tutor about an upcoming test meant missing out on targeted preparation.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student sometimes forgot to complete homework and needed reminders to use notes more actively when stuck on multiplication tables.

When distracted during lessons (as noted in Year 8), it led to confusion with sign rules and slower progress on new topics.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Prospect recently saw Athena, a high school student, take real initiative by constructing her own step-by-step solutions for challenging algebra problems—something she'd hesitated to do before.

Another high schooler, Constanza, has shifted from passively listening to actively asking clarifying questions about fractions and now tackles new equations much faster than at the start of term.

In Year 4, Alyse was able to apply formulas independently when solving worded problems after initially needing lots of prompting; this time she completed her worksheet without any hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Prospect Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rosary School.
