I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and understand the student's learning style and being able to adapt accordingly. Students often learn at a different pace from each other and a tutor should understand when to slow down, when to speed up, or when to adjust the teaching style to suit the student's learning…

I believe that a tutor should be able to provide help for a student, regardless of how much difficulty the student is in at the moment. I believe that my strengths are that I have high confidence in my communication skills, as well as my ability to create optimal plans, and get any points across in a clear, concise, and simple way for students to…

A tutor must be able to understand the challenges faced by the student and equip the student with strong skills to ensure they reach their full potential. One of my major strengths as a tutor is that I have good listening skills which creates a smooth conversation with the student. I also have good time management skills which ensures that every…

A tutor needs to understand how each student’s learning style differs and tailoring the teaching approach to suit their needs. This allows student to gain a deeper understanding of the subject. A tutor also needs to provide encouragement and foster a positive learning environment. This can be done by encouraging students to ask questions and…

I want to ensure that the student feels comfortable, and I want them to speak up when any concerns arise. I don't want interactions to be awkward as I believe that being preserved is an obstacle in effective learning. Having the ability to explain key concepts and the structures to answer questions for the given subject is also important. I also…

I consider the ability to connect and inspire the students to be the most important thing. To me, it is important to bring up their interest and motivate them to strive and reach their fullest potential rather than just teaching them from the material. I am able to connect with my students to understand their goals and I genuinely care for them to…

I think that the best thing to do when tutoring is allow the students free rein when answering questions, as I have often found that almost all of their learning comes from when they make mistakes. I tend to try to give them only small nudges when getting them to complete a question, and reduce the amount of my interference over preceding…

Give them the confidence they need to stay motivated to acheive their Goals. Whether it be merely passing a class or excelling wih 99%, any improvement needs to be congratulated. Be patient, if the student is not understanding your explanation, obviously a different approach is needed. Do not lecture. This the students are already receiving in…

I think the most important thing is to build their confidence. I know it can be challenging to be learning new concepts at school and not understand them, so I would make my students feel comfortable in coming to me with any questions no matter how small or large they are, to make themselves feel confident in their own abilities and learning…

The most important part of being a tutor is to provide support. I gain trust with my students by showing them that I am there to support them fully. I engage with them one on one and ensure that there is truly no question 'too stupid' that they cannot ask me for help with. I find over time how the student personally learns and work with their own…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are building confidence and encouraging independence in learning. For example, if a student struggles with algebra, rather than just providing the answers, a good tutor helps break down the problem into smaller, understandable steps, guiding the student through the process. This not only…

The most important thing is helping the student actually understand the material, not just memorise it. Once they understand why something works, they can apply it to different problems, which is especially important in subjects like Mathematics Applications and higher-level maths. It’s also really important to build the student’s…

Inside RivertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lara worked on graphing linear equations, finding gradients from tables and coordinates, and using the midpoint formula.

In Year 9, Ethan practised solving simultaneous equations by both substitution and elimination, as well as tackling worded problems that required forming and rearranging algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia focused on expanding and factorising quadratic equations, then used the quadratic formula to solve for unknowns in standard form.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly skipped writing out full algebraic steps when rearranging trigonometric ratios, leading to confusion between numerators and denominators—"I had to keep reminding her to write out the whole equation before she tried to solve."

In Year 9 statistics, another found it difficult to organise data in Excel, losing time hunting for functions rather than analysing results.

A Year 8 learner often left worded questions incomplete, misreading which triangle side was required, then hesitated to use provided formula sheets.

After setbacks with negative numbers in simultaneous equations (Year 11), calculator reliance increased and confidence dropped mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Riverton noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to attempt algebraic questions now starts each one independently, writing out every step before asking for feedback.

In a recent high school session, another student who struggled with interpreting linear graphs was able to accurately draw lines from equations and explain the meaning of slope and intercept without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student who used to guess at place value questions has begun talking through her reasoning out loud, using number tables confidently to find answers.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Riverton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Riverton Primary School.
